Dublin, and the young Arthur & Anne detective agency takes its second client: Mrs Vale, a handsome, iron-composed widow whose impractical nephew Julian has just announced his engagement to a Hungarian countess. Countess Ilona Várady is staying at the Shelbourne — though not, it seems, as an ordinary guest, but as a companion and interpreter. The aunt suspects a common fortune-hunter.
What Arthur, Anne and Pip uncover is stranger and far cleverer: a three-afternoon exhibition of portrait miniatures on Merrion Square, a dealer with a smooth manner, and a crate booked for the evening mailboat from Dún Laoghaire. It is the countess herself who leans close to a glass case and quietly announces that the exquisite little portrait within is not the one that stood there before. A chip in the glass that has somehow healed. A landscape hung to distract the eye. And a crisp new pound note that could not possibly have changed hands on the day everyone swears it did.
The Countess in the Frame is the seventh volume of the Arthur, Anne and Pip mysteries — an original Golden Age-style story of art forgery, sharp eyes, and a partnership settling at last behind its second desk.
The seven Captain Hastings, Anne and Pip stories, in chronological order:

💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
A forged miniature nearly sailed for the Continent, and it was a borrowed countess with a sharp eye — not the detective — who saw the swap first. When the cleverest person in the room is the one everyone underestimated, how often does the real solution walk in as somebody's fiancée? 🕵️

It begins with something the newspapers swore was impossible: a man who simply vanishes. On a foggy February afternoon, Mr. Leonard Marvell walks out into the London streets and is never seen again — no body, no ransom, no trace — and his devoted sister goes to Scotland Yard in a state of terror; the last person known to have been near him was a tall figure in an Inverness cape, glimpsed through the murk, and the more the Yard's men pull at the threads the more the whole affair tightens into a knot they cannot loosen. So they do what they have grudgingly learned to do — they hand it to Lady Molly, the brilliant, elegant head of the Female Department, who sees the shape of the truth long before the men around her will admit it is there. From Baroness Orczy, the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel, comes another jewel of Edwardian detection and one of the very first great female detectives in fiction, presented complete and unabridged, exactly as she wrote it, from the Midnight Archive, Nocturnal Tales' library of the classic detective stories that built the genre.
ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is a complete, unabridged reading of The Man in the Inverness Cape by Baroness Orczy, first published in 1910 and now in the public domain. Every word is the author's own. Part of The Midnight Archive: three nights of classics every week, alongside four original Nocturnal Tales mysteries.

The Archive is deep — more Lady Molly? Sherlock Holmes? Father Brown? Arsène Lupin? Martin Hewitt? Violet Strange? Vote in the poll attached to this episode, or tell us in the comments which classic you want to hear by lamplight.
💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
A man vanishes with no body and no trace, and a tall figure in a cape is the only clue. Do you think a person can truly disappear — or is "impossible" just a puzzle no one has looked at correctly yet? 🕵️
