Scotland, October. A grey house above the Firth of Clyde, and a shooting party that is about to go very badly wrong.

Sir Malcolm Ardmore has gathered a small company at his estate on the Cowal peninsula: his godson Cecil, who inherited money at twenty-one and spent it enthusiastically; the financial adviser who manages what little remains; a retired major who can discuss nothing but shooting; a Glasgow physician; and a young widow whose feelings for Cecil are obvious to everybody except Cecil.

Over whisky on the first evening, Cecil mentions — lightly, the way a man mentions the weather — that there is an insurance policy on his life. Seventy-five thousand pounds.

"Worth killing a man for," says the Major. Everybody laughs, except the one person who does not.

By ten the next morning Cecil is dead beside a fallen pine, his rifle a few feet from his hand. A tragic accident, everyone agrees. And the very first thing the Belgian Detective notices is that the ground beneath the rifle is completely unmarked.

A ridge that gives the wrong angle. An earlier shot nobody has accounted for. A witness at the boathouse. And a killing arranged with such care that it was never meant to look like murder at all.

The Ardlamont Shot is an original Golden Age-style mystery about money, marksmanship, and a death designed to be filed as bad luck.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers. The plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation; the historical epilogue draws on the real Ardlamont Mystery of 1893, which ended in one of the strangest verdicts in Scottish legal history. All characters and events in the story are fictional. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
Scotland allows a third verdict: not proven. Not innocent, not guilty — simply not established. Is that an honest admission of doubt, or a way of letting a jury avoid the decision it was asked to make? 🕵️

Tonight, the case widely held to be the finest Max Carrados ever appeared in — and one of the most quietly frightening stories of its decade.

A young naval lieutenant comes to the blind detective with something he cannot prove and cannot forget. His sister Millicent is married to a man named Creake: cold, careful and thoroughly unpleasant. And the lieutenant is convinced — on evidence that would make any policeman laugh — that Creake intends to kill her.

There is no crime to investigate. Nothing has happened yet.

That is precisely the problem. Carrados is not being asked to solve a murder. He is being asked to stop one, without a shred of proof that would satisfy a magistrate, against a man who has arranged things so carefully that when his wife dies it will look like an act of God.

So a blind man walks the lane past a lonely cottage. He counts his paces. He listens to the wires overhead. And he works out exactly how it is meant to be done.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is a complete, unabridged reading of The Tragedy at Brookbend Cottage by Ernest Bramah, collected in Max Carrados (1914) and now in the public domain. Every word is the author's own. There are certain adventures which, looking back, seem to have announced themselves from the beginning. The weather is too fine. The sea is too calm. And the hotel proprietor smiles a little too readily when he assures you that the little motor launch is perfectly reliable.

A small Greek island, Kalathos. The Belgian Detective and his friend Captain Arthur have been there a fortnight — Arthur on holiday, the detective merely conducting his usual habits in a warmer climate, his shoes immaculate and his moustaches geometrically precise. Arthur arranges a pleasure excursion around the western coast. His friend stands on the harbour wall, looks at the boat, and says he does not like it.

By evening the launch is broken between two rocks, and six people are dragging themselves ashore onto an island that appears on no chart and carries no name: a distinguished elderly gentleman and his wife, a watchful young woman travelling under a shortened name, a London doctor, a Greek boatman who will not say why he refuses to land there, and two men who never intended to be there at all.

Above the cove there is a ruin. Inside the ruin there is a dead man.

And in the dust of the floor, before any of the survivors set foot in the place, there are three sets of footprints.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
The last word on this case is that the danger lies in believing that because one has been wronged, one can no longer be wrong. When you reach the end — do you have any sympathy left, or none at all? 🕵️

More from the detective who joined the Archive last night: Dr. John Thorndyke, created by R. Austin Freeman in 1909 — doctor, barrister, and the first true forensic scientist in detective fiction.

Thorndyke is not a newspaper reader. He considers the form a disorderly parade of unrelated facts, destructive to consecutive thought. He allows himself a quarter of an hour with a blue pencil and a pair of shears, and then the paper goes in the fire.

This morning the shears pause. A cutting about another art robbery — one of those maddening cases where the motive makes no sense. You cannot melt down an ivory carving. You cannot sell it as it stands. The very qualities that make such a thing valuable make it impossible to turn into money.

The thief got past a caretaker who was himself a retired police-sergeant. He left almost nothing behind him.

    Almost. He left a hat.

And from a hat, and what is caught inside it, Thorndyke proposes to describe the man who wore it — where he came from, what he was trained in, and where the stolen collection is at this moment.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
A complete, unabridged reading of The Anthropologist at Large by R. Austin Freeman, collected in John Thorndyke's Cases (1909) and now in the public domain. Every word is the author's own, including the scientific reasoning of its period. Part of The Midnight Archive: three nights of classics every week, alongside four original Nocturnal Tales mysteries.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
Freeman's argument was that a detective should show you the evidence, not tell you a story about it. Having heard both Thorndyke cases now — more satisfying than a detective who simply astonishes you, or less? 🕵️

Tonight the Archive opens on a detective it has never opened before — and one who changed crime fiction more than almost anyone who came after Sherlock Holmes.

Dr. John Thorndyke, created by R. Austin Freeman in 1909: a medical man and a barrister, and the first true forensic scientist in detective fiction. Every laboratory scene in crime fiction since owes him something.

A young woman is found murdered in a railway carriage on the line down to Woldhurst. The compartment was locked. The train did not stop. A man is already under arrest, and the case against him looks complete — motive, opportunity, and a weapon of a most peculiar kind. His solicitors send a telegram asking Thorndyke to direct the defence, and they want him on the eight twenty-five from Charing Cross.

What Thorndyke brings to the scene is not intuition. It is a research case, a microscope, and a refusal to accept the obvious explanation while a simpler one remains untested.

And unlike almost every detective of his era, he is not hunting a criminal. He is standing between an innocent man and a conviction that everybody else finds perfectly satisfactory.

Moscow, March 1933. The snow is grey with coal smoke, foreign engineers are watched as a matter of routine, and a turbine that simply broke down is no longer permitted to have simply broken down.

A British engineer is found shot behind his own locked office door. The window is closed. There is no weapon in the room. And beneath his dead hand, three words written in English: "the British did it".

Six Englishmen are in the city, and every one of them is now a suspect in something far larger than a murder. There is a page torn out of a technical report. A telephone call from Room Twelve. An envelope of evidence that arrives a little too neatly. And a dying message that everybody in Moscow is reading the wrong way round.

As the political machinery closes in and a private crime is dressed up as an international conspiracy, the Belgian Detective and Arthur must reach the truth first — a theft so ordinary that the man who committed it would genuinely rather be suspected of treason.

The Moscow Sabotage is an original Golden Age-style mystery about surveillance, confession, and how easily a small crime can be handed a much larger costume.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers. The plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation; the historical epilogue draws on the real Metro-Vickers affair, which brought Britain and the Soviet Union to the edge of a diplomatic rupture in the spring of 1933. All characters and events in the story are fictional. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS

Eight miniatures on ivory. Ten thousand pounds. A house where nobody came and nobody went.

Old Mr. Frewin, the art dealer, has spent two years pinned to an invalid chair at Blatchley House, near Brighton. His one remaining joy is his collection — above all the eight Englehearts, three inches high, painted on ivory, the finest specimens in existence. The Louvre sent men from Paris to buy them. He refused.

On the evening of January the fourteenth he suffers his third seizure. The case of miniatures is brought to his bedside so that he can hold them one last time. His wife asks to be left alone with him for a few minutes. There is a son she wants to speak about — a disgraced son, cut out of everything, whom the old man swore never to forgive.

By morning the old man is dead and the miniatures are gone.

The house was full of people. The doors were watched. Nothing was broken and nobody was seen. Scotland Yard is blamed in the papers for getting nowhere — and the case goes to the one officer whose methods the Yard does not entirely approve of.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is a complete, unabridged reading of The Frewin Miniatures by Baroness Orczy, collected in Lady Molly of Scotland Yard (1910) and now in the public domain. Every word is the author's own. Saint Patrick's Day, Dublin, 1929. Captain Arthur has agreed to perform one simple act of kindness: to walk Lady Eleanor's spaniel down to the dog show at the RDS with a green ribbon on his collar. Pip objects — not to patriotism, but to ornament.

Before luncheon, the simple act of kindness has cost rather more than expected. A professional reputation compromised. A titled lady offended. And a breeder up from Berkshire calmly explaining that Pip is not Pip at all: he is a stolen champion named Blenheim Caesar, and she has the papers to prove it.

She does have papers. That is the difficulty. A registration certificate. A veterinary description of his markings. A photograph dated 1926. And every single one of them is very slightly wrong: a certificate describing marks that were only learned last Tuesday, and a year written on a photograph mount that the photograph cannot possibly belong to.

To keep a dog who has never been anywhere near Berkshire, Arthur and Anne must prove that a perfectly documented claim is a perfectly documented lie.

The Pedigree of Pip is an original Golden Age-style mystery about paperwork, possession, and the question of who a creature really belongs to.

✨ A REIMAGINED EDITION — one of our earliest cases, completely rewritten, expanded and newly recorded. If you heard the original, this is a different telling: longer, richer, and with far more of the mountain in it.

High in the Alps, where the air is keen with pine and the silence is broken only by falling snow, there stands a sanctuary of extraordinary luxury — a resort of golden stone where the very rich come not to rest but to withdraw from the ordinary world altogether.

Madame Elena Rossi is an opera singer at the height of her powers: admired, envied, and not much loved. She has taken to her rooms, and she has a great many enemies under that one roof.

Then the snow closes the passes. The roads are gone, the guests are sealed in together — and one of the most celebrated voices in Europe is found dead in the snow.

A ruined man. A frightened doctor. A rival waiting in the wings. Almost everyone in that gilded hotel had a reason to wish her gone, and nobody can leave. As the drifts deepen, the Belgian Detective begins, very quietly, to watch the people who were watching her.

The Alpine Snowbound Secrets is an original Golden Age-style mystery about envy, applause, and what the very rich will do when the world can no longer see them.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers — but the plot, the characters and the text are entirely our own creation. All characters and events in this story are fictional. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
Snowed in, cut off, and every single guest with a reason to want her silenced. If you were trapped in that hotel with them — would you rather be the one investigating, or the one nobody notices at all? 🕵️

Tonight, the story that answers a question we left hanging.

When we opened the Raffles stories with "The Ides of March," he mentioned, almost in passing, an unreported incident on a certain cricket tour — and then refused to say another word about it. Bunny tried for years. Raffles would only shake his head and watch his cigarette smoke, with that look half cynical and half wistful, as though the honest days that were no more had had their merits after all.

    Tonight he finally tells it.

"Le Premier Pas" — the first step. This is the story of the very first crime A. J. Raffles ever committed: a young cricketer far from home, touring Australia, riding out through gum trees and dust to a bank in a small country town. Where he is mistaken for somebody he is not.

It is one small misunderstanding, and it hands him an opportunity no honest man would have taken. Of all his stories, this is the only one that carries the ghost of a dead remorse.

    ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is a complete, unabridged reading of Le Premier Pas by E. W. Hornung, collected in The Amateur Cracksman (1899) and now in the public domain. Every word is the author's own. Part of The Midnight Archive: three nights of classics every week, alongside four original Nocturnal Tales mysteries.

    🗳️ YOU CHOOSE WHAT'S NEXT
The Archive is deep — more Raffles? Sherlock Holmes? Father Brown? Max Carrados? Lady Molly? Loveday Brooke? Arsène Lupin? Vote in the poll attached to this episode, or tell us in the comments which classic you want to hear by lamplight.

    💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
He didn't set out to become a thief. He was handed a door that happened to be open, and he walked through it. Is there a single first step in anyone's life that decides the rest — or do we only see it looking backwards? 🕵️
