Welcome to Episode 10 of Nooks and Crannies!
Fortifying Beeferoni, Big Pharma Eugenics, Nonplus Teens and Full Throated Endorsements
    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
On this very special Tenth Anniversary Spectacular, Evan and Matt spend time talking about their poke checks and underhanded hockey moves..turns out Matty is a clean goon, aside from the Mike Tee encounter, sorry about that brother.
We maintain the Canadian tradition of speaking ill of the weather (8:10), followed by Matty’s approach to “Fortifying” garbage processed foods like the indelible Beeferoni, following this Matt provides a “Full Throated” endorsement of Willows Pizza, the best pie outside of Naples (9:57)
Hey folks, remember when you spit in that vile for fun and shipped it to a faceless corporation? Ya turns out that corporation was bought by a big pharmaceutical firm and you are now unwilling participants in a global epidemiological study with no compensation (14:57). After that cheery chat, we start plugging the heck out of other people’s shows: Issa Wurie of Fear and Desires had Matty on to talk all about insomnia, the episode is about Issa discovering his sleep apnea and how this has affected his life, this will be a highly regarded show at some point, extremely creative and I am really proud of your Brof! We also chatted about, the soon to be our show, Play Comics Podcast, formally hosted by the kindest most giving and generous podcaster around Chris Osborne (21:33), he recently had N&C own Paul Combs and P. Cosmo from Varmints on so be sure to give those a listen.
Tell Chris; Nooks and Crannies are coming!
(23:54) So Matty was recently listening to conservative AM talk radio in Victoria and there was this ad for this website. Honestly, no spoilers on this one but do plan on marking your calendar for Nooks and Crannies very own FB Live Stream Event!! Matt, the hottest guest in podcasting, Sanderson basically just gloats for like 5 mins about all the amazing shows that want to have him on (31:10) including; Pop Up Film Cast, Unapologetically Me: a Mental Health Podcast, and Submitted For your Approval: A Twilight Zone Podcast. (35:33) Evan fires off a recommendation of his own for the podcast Michael and Us, a Canadian podcast that revisits Michael Moore movies and others with a harshly lefty critique that enjoys slamming so-called ‘progressive liberalism’. Of course Evan loves these guys. We end the show with one more recommendation and some words of thanks for the compelling general conversation podcast Mouse and Weens, thanks Jo for the early support and kind words (37:19)
    Podcasts Mentioned
Fears and Desires: by our brof and yours, Issa Wurie
Play Comics Podcast: Our new podcast project we just gotta let Chris know first…
Pop Up Film Cast: A comedic parody pod that offers hilariously fake movie reviews
Unapologetically Me: A Mental Health Podcast, by Boomer Perrault aka best name in podcasts
Submitted For your Approval: A Twilight Zone Podcast, its about the Twilight Zone…
Michael and Us, a lefty retrospective movie review podcast, Evan also aged me horribly here..
Mouse and Weens, our first super fan, aside from Matt’s mom, gets a special shout out. Thanks Jo, really appreciated those messages while I was going through my insomnia, it was a good motivator to get back at it!

  • 9 - Couple of Babbling Varmints

Welcome to Episode 9 of Nooks and Crannies!

    A Couple of Babbling Varmints

This week we hear a whole lot of babbling from Evan and Matt, bit of a grab bag so to speak, as well as Part 3/3 with Paul Cosmo (Csomo) one half of the dynamic duo over at The Varmints Podcast! The Varmints is a family friendly, yet thoroughly researched, show about animals in all their glorious wonder; this is the section where Paul provides the origin story (12:33) of the show and waxes poetic about all the fine qualities of Nooks and Crannies own personal designer, Donna Hume!!

  • 8 - Calipers, Craft Beer and Gun Control

Welcome to Episode 8 of Nooks and Crannies!

Calipers, Craft Beer and Gun Control

This week Evan tells us how he learned Lebanese people do not enjoy having highly contentious political discussions while driving him to and from work! In our first segment (4:55) we thankfully hear the conclusion of the racist history of Anthropology but not before we hear all about Eugenics (6:31) and Phrenology (16:03), Evan and Matt wrap things up with a bit of a broader conversation about how these ideas from the 19th century still resonate (17:55).

Going forward we will be leaving this history where it belongs and continuing our march through the annals of anthropology with Boas, Malinowski and that whole gaggle of characters, so…I dunno, hold onto the edge of your seats for that I guess.

After this Evan and Matty decided that they needed at least 1 drink, so they recorded their thoughts and here they are (23:40). After Evan finished his Manhattan he decided to listen to the proud Floridian Paul ‘Cosmo’ Csomo, co-host of the amazing animal podcast Varmints, graciously kick off the “Where’s There Like?” mini-ethnographic segment (27:28). We covered a lot of ground here; from ‘cosmo’politan cuisine to the lack of road gators, the futility of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and ended things on a not really at all-contentious gun conversation (40:40). Honestly, Ol’ Matty actually got a bit of a schooling, thanks Paul, twas fascinating. Listen for the conclusion of Paul and Matt’s chat on Ep9.

If that all was not enough, Matt decided to bring back Matty’s Corner from the Podstuff Podcast (48:06)! On this edition, Matty recommends The Skip and Josh Podcast because it is like two friends who are much more knowledgeable about all sports, including hockey, then Evan is, having an in-depth yet approachable conversation about all sports and hockey which of course Evan, being a Sens fan and all, would have no chance keeping up with. Because his team sucks, this is what I am trying to say. Matthew then recommends the Edge of Sports Podcast by Dave Zirin, which is like a one-stop-shop for all things Politics of Sport. Evan retorts with a New York Times op-ed by Lara Bazelon that suggests Kamala Harris may not, in fact, be a progressive prosecutor (51:06).

  • 7 - Bull-Dawgz, Brain Injuries and Mutton-Chops

Welcome Back to Nooks and Crannies, and thanks for hanging in there during our hiatus.

This week we have a heavy episode, and I am not just talking about the Mutton-Chops!

We kick matters off with a blisteringly uninteresting discussion of the weather, including Evan’s approach to wearing Long-John’s and the sculpted nature of Matty’s Legs.

We invited Edward James Almos aka Matty and that lil rapscallion Lou Diamond Phillips aka Heaven, back on N&C!! This can only mean it’s the resumption of the ANTHROPOLOGY 101 series (6:16); we are talking Darwin and Huxley and after a little interlude, finishing up on Edward Tylor (19:14) who founded the discipline, as well as sent it on a racist path for like, oh I don’t know, only 50+ years, a legacy that anthropology is still trying to shake loose from to this day.

Right in the middle of the racist history of anthropology, is a light-hearted discussion of Matty’s most recent noggin knock (13:10). Matty deploys an amazing segway of his own and uses this trauma as a way of shamelessly plugging the Chronicity Series-to be launched March 2019. This will be a mashup of 16 interviews with podcasters and podcast enthusiasts who spoke to me about their chronic illnesses. Be sure to hit subscribe to not miss out, and tell your friends about this one please, thanks in advance

Because this was such a heavy episode, I decided to throw a Bonus Surprise Segment in at the end to lighten the mood. We are talking Eugenics and Phrenology next week…so, just wanted to leave a good taste in your mouths. Big ol thanks to Paul Csomo, co-host of the Varmints Podcast for indulging me, tune in next week to hear the rest of our diatribes!

  • 6 - The Kinship of Neuro Anti-Inflammation

    Welcome to Nooks and Crannies!

Episode 6: The Kinship of Neuro Anti-Inflammation

This week the Evan and Matt kick things off by talking about a Spit Take Matty made a few months back after winning a trip for two to Vegas. The intro was recorded before he left, now he is back and Matty feels like he has been poisoned, so … good trip! J

Matty (aka: Edward James Almos) informs Evan (aka; 1987 era Lou Diamond Phillips) that he has class which can only mean that it is the inception of ANTHRO 101 (6:41)!! Just one segment, to get your feet wet, we cover: “what the heck is anthropology?” (8:20) and “how in goodness gracious’ name does one do it??” (11:30) and a little bit on the wider philosophical debates (18:10).

After this tantalizing anthropological discussion, we hear the second and last half of the interview that Matt did with Amy Longard, an Ottawa-based whole-food specializing nutritionist; all about concussion nutrition (22:00), anti-inflammation strategies that are not just a fad (25:30) and some of her views how to incorporate nutrition into our own overall wellness strategies (37:45). I wanted to end the chat with some specifics about Women’s health and nutrition, which like all topics of our conversation dovetailed into an interesting side talk on the Care-Taker role and women’s socially ascribed gender roles (40:35).

Had a fascinating time talking with Amy, be sure to follow her on social, visit her website and sign-up for her newsletter for all sorts of interesting information and recipes *it’s free eh!

    Next week:

We hear all about Phrenology and Eugenics-Darwinian Anthropology from the late 1800’s-plus a full run down on Matty’s Vegas-inspired debauchery and maybe a Great Chocolate Bar Debate with Paul Cosmo Csomo, co-host of the much more successful Varmints Podcast

  • The Perry and Lindsay Johnson Interview

    ********TRIGGER WARNING*********

This interview delves into Perry Johnson’s cancer treatments and its impacts on his and Lindsay’s marriage. Also, if you are triggered by crying, avoid the intro and outro (see show notes for audio tags) the interview itself has no tears.

If this episode is too much for you personally, please consider sharing it widely as it will more likely land in the podcatcher of someone who needs to hear it. Do include a trigger warning as well I think. Kay, back to the show!

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Welcome friends and family of Perry and Lindsay Johnson. This is the interview that Matt Sanderson recorded with them Aug 28th 2018. It was 3 months into Perry’s treatments and the outlook at that time was tentatively optimistic as that very day they received some good news about his treatments. We talked about this at the end, but I decided to remove it (it is saved for Lindsay later), though I could not bring myself to delete anything in this interview because of the present circumstances, I did not want to lose any of either of their voices.

What you are about to hear is a completely unedited conversation between the three of us all about cancer and the caregiver relationship.

I would like to thank them again for saying yes to my interview request and for opening up and being painfully honest, something all their fans and friends especially appreciate.

    Show Notes

Matt kicks things off by sobbing through some prepared remarks, after which he plays the full Perry and Lindsay Johnson interview recorded in Late Aug 2018 (9:02). After the conversation, Matty the sad sack Sanderson busts back in with some more crying and closing remarks (1:19:06) which includes the saddest possible song he could think to sing; Famous Blue Raincoat by Leonard Cohen (1:21:13).

  • 5 - Boxing Day Hangover and Hockey Spectacular

Welcome to Nooks and Crannies’ First Annual Boxing Day Spectacular!!

Evan and Matt kick things off talking about the end of the semester and realize that Evan does not have any writing skills or time management tactics, it seems he gets through on charm alone. We then hear all about the holiday over at the Ferguson’s and Sanderson’s (6:07) including tips on how to effectively argue non-factor points with your extended family!!

Matt then busts in with ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (8:21) which is so well done it could immediately be released on Audible! After a little World Junior Hockey Tourney Talk (11:35), a Boxing Day Tradition in Canada btw, we hear from Chris Osborne host of Play Comics Podcast who wanted to critique Matties phonics (18:41). Chris Oh barges back on the show with some heart-warming diatribe on the importance of thanking and loving on all the lovelies in your lovey-dovey life; ‘Twas quite lovely Yu’le All (20:25).

As Matt’s Grandma always says after all the presents; Aren’t. We. Lucky?!?

I am fortunate to all those podcasters who have accepted me into the indie-podcasting family, thank you for all the support and encouragement!

***Evan is too cynical to add comments on this matter***

In the spirit of lovely loving on others, Matt revitalized Matty’s Corner (21:30), the podcast review segment he developed for Perry and Lindsay’s Podcast, The Podstuff. Violet Sanderson guides us into the new segment Matt developed that day; Three Questions With…Issa Wurie (24:56), host of the soon to be launched (Jan ’19) podcast Fears and Desires. As is always the case with Issa and I, we talked about everything under the sun and even some stuff in the shadows, from empathy to narrative exchange, or how about the fact that Issa is a closeted Anthropologist who actively engages in the ongoing embodied exchange of culturally endued narrative that, semiotically speaking, of course, have polymorphic dialectical meaning(s)…Just your average Issa-Matt chin-wag (26:14). And to wrap things up, the boys do a little Meta Segment about Future Segments (49:55).

Welcome to Nooks and Crannies, Episode 4!

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

This week we had a bit of a delay due to extenuating circumstances, but there is no stopping Nooks and Crannies!

This week we hear the remainder of Pau_uuls Podcast; Westerns, be sure to take a look at the show notes to see the links that Capt. Concussion forgot to include in the last episode. Paul and Matt kick things off talking about The Wild Bunch (2:10) and its famous Bridge Scene, then advance theories as to why the Western died in the 80’s (4:35) including the Star Wars Factor (7:45) and the hottest of Hot Takes by Pauley (15:37). Mamoo decided that now was the time to deep dive on Lonesome Dove (17:03). Paul fills us in on the Waterworld of Westerns (22:09) and wrap up this section with some talk on Unforgiven (23:15).

Amy Longard is an Ottawa based nutritionist that Matt met at a chronic pain gathering in Strathcona Park in the summer (24:28). Amy described how her own healthy lifestyle in some ways was the cause of her chronic illnesses and how this eventually led to chef’s training and a new career in nutritional care (30:10). Mattie proposes a theory (35:03) about the immediacy of nutritional efficacy and Amy bridges off this describe her own approach in helping others (39:55).

Part 2 of this interview will play next week, stay tuned and in the meantime follow Amy on Instagram, sign up for her newsletter and read her blog.

Last but not least, its Pau_uuls podcast again! We wrap things up continuing to debate the causality of Westerns decline in the ’80s (45:45), it got pretty heated, almost had to Kick Paul off the show just like I did to Evan. Anywhoozy, We kept talking about Unforgiven (49:12), including yet another incisive point by Paul about Toxic Masculinity (54:30). We do a mini deep dive on Tombstone (57:16) then a brief chat about post-2000’s Westerns (1:01:01) and finish up on Blazing Saddles (1:10:45)

  • Bonus 1 - Pau_uuls Podcast: Westerns

    Welcome to Nooks and Crannies!

On this surprise bonus episode, Matt is joined by friend and fellow podcaster Paul Combs who foolishly agreed to undertake a 1.5 hr deep dive on the Cinematic Genre of Westerns. In this hunk we start with a discussion of The Great Train Robbery (1903) and all its innovative innovations. Included in the Silent Film era section is some information Matt pulled up about African American actors who played roles in films of this era (13:00) and a revelatory revelation about Bill Picket, the Bull Dodger!

We blasted through the 30-40’s but covered Stagecoach (1939) quite a bit as it is one of Paul’s personal favorites (17:55), we then delve into the golden-era (1950-60’s) and suggest ways the political-social-cultural context in shaped and drove the popularity of the genre (21:02) and conclude this hunk by absolutely nerding out really hard on Spaghetti Westerns (29:51)
