DIFFERENCES AND UNITY

During stressful times, it is easy for any of us to join in the criticism of others and in finger pointing. Unkindness prevails and thoughtless words deepen divides.

But there is another way. It is a way that says what we hold in common is more important than our differences. A way that seeks not to tear down, but to build up and to work together. A way that emphasizes our common humanity and the value of our relationships.

This is the way we find made possible by God through Jesus Christ. In Jesus, differences are valued but do not divide. Differences become strengths, building unity.

A NEW PURPOSE

Most of us realize that life is ultimately not fulfilled by living for fame, fortune or success. Living for ourselves alone cannot satisfy.

This Sunday, as we continue our series of sermons on Paul's letter to the Philippians, we discover God's bigger purpose for our lives. Living that purpose changes the way we view events and how we use our time and talents. It gives us freedom from the fear of death and the freedom to live life as an exciting adventure. To live God's purpose is to live life to the fullest...and to be satisfied!

NEW HEARTS

Circumstances often form the condition of our hearts. When circumstances are good, we expect hearts to be good; when circumstances are bad, we are not surprised that hearts grow hard.

But how do we explain it when someone endures difficulty after difficulty, yet exhibits an open, generous, and caring heart? This is what we find in a guy named Paul, whose letters are collected in the Bible. In spite of all his troubles, Paul demonstrates a joyful heart!

Join us this Sunday as we begin a new sermon series, delving into Paul's letter to Christians in Philippi. We'll find out how Jesus Christ brings newness to all areas of life....beginning with our HEARTS.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

This Sunday is Pentecost, the day Christians celebrate how God's Spirit empowered the first followers of Jesus to speak and show forgiving love with their lives. On that day, God's Spirit came in such a dramatic way that thousands of people believed in Jesus and chose to follow him. But there were also those who ridiculed what happened.

Those who believed found a new purpose for their lives, excitement for their living. Those who sneered missed out.

God's Spirit is still doing startling things today. How will you respond?

If you've never been to church - or even if you have - you know how Christians can sometimes use strange words: “salvation, justification, second coming," etc. Even words we think we know - “joy, hope, resurrection" - can sometimes have different meanings.

So what about a word like "Ascension"?

I've been in church all my life, but this word sometimes still confuses me. What does Ascension mean? And what if I said that this word could actually change your life???

TRANSITIONS

May is a month for transitions: ending of school, beginning of summer, graduations, retirements, weddings, and special family gatherings. Transitions can be joyful, but they aren't always easy.

This Sunday we will talk about a time when early Christians made a HUGE transition from being an all-Jewish community to one that welcomed a diversity of people. While it wasn't an easy transition, God blessed it, and the result was joy.

MOTHER'S DAY WORSHIP

Mother's Day is a day of great emotion: joy and celebration and also sadness and grief. But most of all it is a day of love when we remember and honor special women in our lives.

This Mother's Day, we are honoring Blue Monarch, a local ministry which cares for women and children with the tenderness of a mother. Blue Monarch is a special place.
