Most everyone supports cutting youth smoking. But there’s disagreement on the details of how to do that.

County supervisors spent over 3 hours yesterday reviewing a proposed plan to make it harder for under aged youth to buy cigarettes and other smoking materials. But while some details were clarified, no final action was taken.

With the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada at its lowest level in recorded history, the glaciers that once covered those rocky summits peaks are also melting away. An intensive effort to clean up a section of the Laguna de Santa Rosa yielded a small mountain of tires, bottles and other debris.

Accumulated trash is clogging the Laguna de Santa Rosa, but most of it is being washed downstream from the urban centers within the Laguna’s watershed. So a recent clean-up effort is, at best, a temporary improvement.

The Valley Fire had burned over 67,000 acres, but 30% containment is now reported. The fire has claimed at least one life, injured 4 others and destroyed nearly 600 homes. Many other structures have burned as well, and thousands remain threatened. At least 10,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes.

Litter in our parks and neighborhoods has become something of an obsession for one Marin county woman….and she’s on the quest to not only keep it at bay…but keep it out of the San Francisco Bay.

Heather Itzla is currently raising money to start a pop-up shop that will sell non-plastic alternatives to regularly used items like school supplies, party favors and gift wrap. It’s the oldest electronic musical instrument known, and you play it without ever touching it. The Occidental Arts & Ecology Center’s annual fall Chataqua revue features an eclectic array of local performers. This year, they include local actor, writer and mime Eliot Fintushul playing an unusual electronic instrument called a Theremin.
