Sonoma County is slated to receive a 12 million dollar grant from the state of California to be used for Homeless Emergency Aid Programs. Santa Rosa City councilmember Julie Combs hosted a meeting this Saturday for community members to discuss how the funds could best be spent. Presenter Kalia Mussetter runs an organization called Living Bridges which helps connect the homeless with services. KRCB reporter Adia White spoke with her about her personal experience and the types of services she finds most effective.

The smoke and masks of autumn are gone now. But local residents, still recovering from our 2017 fires, are thinking about ways to help 2018 survivors.

Earlier this month, with the Camp Fire still raging, All Things Considered host Audie Cornish spoke with Santa Rosa Assistant City Manager David Guhin. They talked about the status of rebuilding here in Sonoma County. They also discussed lessons that might be passed on to our neighbors to the North and South devastated by this season’s fires. KRCB News Director Steve Mencher listened in.

Good news for renters in the city of Santa Rosa!

The Santa Rosa City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to extend the city’s prohibition on rental housing price gouging. The ordinance will now remain in effect until October of 2019. As part of the ordinance, landlords will be barred from raising the rent by more than 10 percent. As has been the case at other municipal meetings, not enough attention was given to Spanish translation. KRCB’s Adia White was at the meeting and has this report.

The City of Santa Rosa could soon be eligible for more fire recovery funds.

Representatives from the California Department of Housing and Community Development came to Santa Rosa Monday night to present their draft plan for how to spend 124 million dollars in Federal Disaster Funds to be used statewide. KRCB Reporter Adia White has more on who is eligible to apply for the money and how officials plan on distributing it.

A local non-profit is training young people to help resolve health disparities.

On average in the U.S., Latinos receive mental health services about half as often as whites -- that’s according to a 2015 study by Office of Minority Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Sonoma County non-profit, Latino Service Providers, is trying to bridge this gap. It’s training youth between 16 and 25 as community health workers, known in Spanish as “Promotores.” KRCB’s Adia White spoke with Brenda Vargas who represented the program at the Binational Health Fair in Roseland last month. Vargas is 17 years old.

Santa Rosa hosted the 2018 California Economic Summit on Nov. 15th and 16th. Policy makers, business leaders and others came from across California to talk about how to improve the state’s economy and residents’ quality of life. A tradition dating back to the 1800’s is now popular in Mendocino County.

Every year the Hopland Research Extension Center hosts an annual sheep dog trial. Contestants and their dogs travel to Mendocino county, in hopes of earning points that will help them qualify for the national sheep herding competition. That will take place in October of next year . KRCB’s Adia White went to this year’s event on Nov. 11th and has this report.
