  • Maps of Fire Danger May Need Rewriting – Nov 2, 2017
With an estimated $3.3 billion in damages from the North Bay Fires, maps that control building codes may need to be rewritten. The record-breaking destruction of the North Bay fires has many experts questioning the way California determines fire risk. It seems clear that stricter building codes will be required in high-risk areas, but some say the current risk designations are outdated and need re-mapping. Penny Nelson, host of KQED’s The California Report, recently discussed the issue with KQED Science reporter Lauren Sommer. This story continues a partnership we’ve been developing to share content among California stations reporting on the fire and recovery. • Sheriff Rob Giordano Addresses ‘Day of Remembrance’ – Nov 1, 2017
On Saturday, city, county and state officials gathered at Santa Rosa Junior College to remember – with bagpipes and song – those lost in the North Bay fires.
There were a few voices that calmed and informed us during the recent fires, among them, Pat Kerrigan of KSRO. She held the microphone for hour after hour, providing critical updates to a growing audience during the crisis. Another calming presence was Sheriff/Coroner Rob Giordano. Appointed as a short-term caretaker sheriff, he had pledged that he wouldn’t run for the office next year. Now, after watching him in action every day, some in the community are urging him to become a candidate for Sheriff in 2018.

  • Cannabis Farmers Hit Hard in Mendocino County – Oct 31, 2017
A linchpin of the Mendocino County economy, some cannabis farmers were hit hard by the North Bay fires.
They’ve been called the “wine country” fires – but cannabis farmers suffered losses in the recent firestorm as well. Unlike vintners, whose grapes were nearly all picked, the cannabis harvest was just getting started when the fires struck. Reporter Sarah Reith visited growers who are now reckoning with their losses.
