PM Sermon, September 4, 2016
Presented by Robert Hatfield
Questions submitted by the congregation are given a Bible answer. Questions answered in this lesson are:
* Does Islam have any biblical validation or root?
* How long was Jesus in the tomb?
* In our study of Isaiah we learned that Ephraim is the same as Israel – the erring and mislead northern kingdom that is eventually destroyed forever (Isa. 7:8). Yet, in Jeremiah 31:9 the author refers to Ephraim as the firstborn of God. This firstborn means takes preeminence. How can a destroyed and wicked nation have preeminence from God?
* Rebekah is the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian (Gen. 25:20; 28:2) and Laban is identified as Rebekah’s brother (Gen. 28:2). In Gen. 29:5, Laban is identified as the son of Nahor. If Rebekah and Laban are brother and sister yet had different fathers, are we to understand that Rebekah’s mother had intimate relationships with two different men?
* What does Eccl. 7:16 mean when it says “do not be overly righteous, nor be overly wise: why should you destroy yourself?”
* Last night we were reading about Jephthah in Judges 11. He made the vow to sacrifice whatever came out of his house if he were to be victorious. Even though it’s his daughter that comes out to greet him, he keeps his vow and sacrifices her.
It seems that the value of human life would be more important to God than keeping a vow. Is it reasonable to conclude that God accepted Jephthah’s burnt offering of his daughter?
