Key Truth—The story of Hagar and Sarai is a story of works and grace and redemption and self-effort.

 

The Predicament of Hagar

 

The Bible is not a bunch of moral stories that us how to live and if you live a certain way you will be blessed. The Bible is a story of the power of the gospel to redeem very flawed and sinful people.

God may call you to do something very difficult while you are on the way to your blessing.

 

The Proposal of Sarai

 

Every culture has something in it that says you must have this or that or you are a nobody.

You can be very religious and still attempt to seek your identity and self-worth apart from God.

 

The Participation of Abraham

 

All our problems begin because we choose the way of Adam all over again.

You can either save yourself by works or wait to be saved by grace.

 

The Presence of the Angel of the Lord

 

God hears my cries for help when I don't deserve it because He didn't hear the cries of Jesus on the cross who did deserve to be heard.

You will always be slave to your identity and culture until your heart is overwhelmed with love for a God who sees you and loves you.

Because you have been freed from sin's slavery you now have the responsibility to help those who are enslaved and broken by sin.
