Is Jesus the only way to heaven? We examine what is probably the most controversial I AM statement in our current culture: I am the way, the truth, and the life. We will take an honest look at this statement and compare Jesus' exclusivity with other options like universalism or inclusivity. This sermon will be helpful to believers who desire tools to help them have honest conversations with those in the world who question Jesus as the only way.

At our candlelight service this past Christmas, we examined the statement, “I am the light of the world.” Throughout this series, we will study the remaining six statements so that we can gain a better understanding of exactly who our savior is. 

The 2024-25 Wednesday In The Word study at North Conway Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, is a chapter-by-chapter study through the book of 2nd Samuel.

The study is called 2nd Samuel: A Throne Established Forever and is taught by Senior Pastor Dr. Jay Worthington and Associate Pastor Will O’Brien.

The key to the book and the entire biblical meta-narrative is 2 Samuel 7:16, “Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” This divine promise marked the beginning of a covenant called the Davidic covenant, in which God promised an eternal throne to the house of David. Because of David’s faith, God did not treat David’s descendants as He had treated Saul’s. Sin would be punished, but David’s line would never be completely cut off. God’s unconditional promise to David would ultimately be fulfilled by David’s descendant, Jesus Christ. The covenant also included a continuing promise that the people of Israel would have a land of their own forever. An eternal King is given for an eternal kingdom of an eternal people.

We examine our annual vision of prayer by looking at corporate prayer. We have already talked a lot about personal prayer this year. However, throughout scripture, it is not just clear that Christians should pray, but it is also clear that they should pray together. This week, we will look at some powerful truths about prayer in a small verse written in jail by the prophet Jeremiah. Then, we will launch a month-long church-wide exercise in prayer.

The 2024 vision for North Conway will be “If my people pray…” Throughout this year, we will focus, as a church, on sharpening and deepening our prayer life in our private lives, in our families, and in our church. This coming Sunday, Pastor Jay will kick off the year with an introductory sermon on prayer. What is prayer? Why do we pray? How do we pray? What do we hope to accomplish with prayer? These are all simple questions, but they have very profound answers. Answers that have the power to change our lives and the lives of those around us.

We will examine the next of the I AM statements in John's book. At a time of deep grief and sorrow for Jesus, when his good friend Lazarus was dead, and Lazarus’s sisters were in deep mourning, Jesus proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life.” What a glorious comfort to come during a time of grief. Death is our constant companion in this life, and without the power of Jesus as our resurrection and life, we have nothing to hope for. But with Him as our true hope, we have nothing to fear.

We'll delve into how Jesus uniquely cares for, knows, and loves his sheep, setting him apart as the only one worthy of our trust. We continue our look at the I AM statements in the gospel of John with the first of a two-part description. In John 10, in the same discourse, Jesus refers to himself with several shepherd metaphors. First as the door, then as the good shepherd. These are meant to be taken together and show us a picture of Jesus as our defender and provider. We will study the first to see how we find our protection, our assurance, and our abundance all in Jesus and Jesus alone.

All things come to an end. Our study of 1 Samuel will come to an end with the end of King Saul’s life. His mortality reminds us of our own mortality. Death came to Saul, and it will come to us in our time as well. But for those who have put their faith in the ultimate king, Jesus, death is not the ultimate end; it is simply the transition from this life into a perfect one. Join us for the conclusion of this series. 

Our current series is called “The Story of David,” and will help us to learn to be men and women after God’s heart. King David is one of the most prominent figures in the Bible. He is known for his bravery, piety, and leadership and is considered to be Israel's greatest king. But David was not without his flaws. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and then arranged for her husband to be killed in battle. Despite this, David is still revered for his devotion to God and his commitment to the people of Israel. Overall, King David's legacy is one of leadership, bravery, and devotion to God. 

The overall series through 1 Samuel is called Choose Your King. The book of 1 Samuel contains the record of the calling of the nation of Israel’s first kings. These earthly kings had significant victories in their lives and some devastating failures. We will see our own victories and failures as we look at their lives. But above all, we will see that God, embodied in HIs son Jesus, is the only perfect king and the one we need to follow. Because of the length of the overall book, we will break the series up into several smaller mini-series organized around the central characters. 

We are quickly coming to the end of our study through 1 Samuel. This week, we will study Chapter 30 and see what happens when David hits rock bottom. We have all trials and struggles in our lives. Some hardships come from outside our influence, but some hardships are self-inflicted. We allow our sin and pride to draw us away from God. But then, how do we get back? When we have wandered away, how do we return? We trust in the Savior! Come Sunday to see how great David’s greater son is our strength in times of weakness.
