Under the Old Covenant, God's people were given His law and were blessed with the privilege of being His chosen people, though this relationship was conditional. However, the New Covenant is far superior in that is is established on better promises. The New Covenant accomplishes what the Old failed to bring about because the New Covenant gives what it requires. This sermon is part 1 of 2.

The Old Covenant operated on a principle of works, demanding perpetual compliance that inevitably led to a curse for those who failed. In contrast, the New Covenant is established on better promises through Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law's demands and bore the curse on behalf of believers. This superior ministry provides eternal salvation and access to God, not based on human merit but on faith in Christ's finished work. In this sermon, we are urged to abandon reliance on our own righteousness and rest solely in the grace offered through the New Covenant.

Melchizedek foreshadows Jesus Christ's superior and eternal priesthood. In Hebrews 7, his lack of genealogy and perpetual nature contrast sharply with the temporary Levitical priesthood. Abraham's tithing to and blessing by Melchizedek prove the superiority of this new order over the old covenant system. In Christ, divine justice and mercy meet as the permanent mediator between God and humanity. In this sermon, believers are called to place their hope solely in Jesus, whose intercession never ends.

Genuine Christian assurance rests on both the visible fruits of faith—love, obedience, and patience—and its ultimate ground in God's unchangeable character. Abraham's patient waiting and God's oath to him show that divine promises are secured by God's own integrity. Jesus is the forerunner and steadfast anchor who has entered heaven to guarantee the believer's inheritance. In this sermon, Christians are encouraged to hold fast to hope amid trials, knowing their souls are securely tethered to Christ.
