Amidst
heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula and a major U.S. and South Korean
exercise, North Korea has upped the ante.
I am not talking about its threats to use thermonuclear weapons to
attack our cities. Unfortunately, such
apocalyptic warnings have been an ominous staple of the communist dictatorship
for many years, although its ability actually to carry them out is steadily
improving.
North
Korea today got the attention of its neighbors and American forces assigned to
help protect them by jamming the Global Positioning System.
This
is not the North’s first attack on a system that supports, in addition to
navigation, worldwide telecommunications and commerce, as well as U.S. military
operations. The latest incident
underscores, however, the urgent need to make our indispensable GPS more
resilient against jamming and other threats.
