As Paul is urging Timothy to remain faithful, though so many around them were falling way, and false teaching were slithering their way into the church, and persecution was raging against the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul reminded Timothy of the areas of Paul’s life that he had followed. In this it’s clear the Apostle Paul had a great influence in Timothy’s life. In reminding him of these things Paul was urging Timothy to remain faithful, to continue following his examples, as he called Timothy to be in contrast to the false converts, the false teachers, there in Ephesus. This faithfulness would come with its cost, just as it had for Paul. So Paul said, in verses 12-13; “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” Yet Paul commanded Timothy to continue in what he had learned and had become convinced of, knowing from whom he had learned it. Having learned from Paul, seeing the truth of Scriptures fleshed out in Paul’s life, and having learned the holy Scriptures from childhood, from his grandmother/mother. The Scriptures that are able to bring someone to saving faith in Jesus Christ.
