The fishermen in Hartlepool, or so they say.  This is the story of a local Durham legend, and how it became one.

In February of 1865, a Doctor and Magistrate in Leeds, West Yorkshire accused his cook of stealing two pounds of dripping from him.  Eliza Strafford, the cook, thought the dripping was a perk of her job.  That two pounds of dripping would go on to cause a huge stir in Leeds that month.

In 1882, Michael Marks fled the violence and confusion in the Pale of Settlement to move to the North of England.  A refugee, he went on to found one of the most well known British businesses today, M&S.
