For centuries, the Jewish people depended on priests, sacrifices, and rituals to approach a holy God. That system was real and God-ordained, but it was only a shadow of something far greater. In Week 10 of our Wednesday night Hebrews study, we walk through Hebrews 8 and see why Jesus is our better High Priest.

Coming from the tribe of Judah rather than Levi, Jesus was never meant to serve in the earthly priesthood. He came to establish an eternal priesthood after the order of Melchizedek, offering a sacrifice that was sufficient once and for all. When He declared "It is finished," He sat down at the right hand of the Father, something no Levitical priest was ever permitted to do, because His work was complete.

The new covenant He established places the keeping of it on God Himself. His law is written on our hearts, our sins are remembered no more, and every believer now has direct access to the Father through faith. The invitation is open to everyone to come boldly to the throne of grace.

God desires more than surface-level faith from His people. In this episode, Part 2 of 8 Evidences God Is Calling You Higher from our Counter the Culture series, we draw from Hebrews 5 and Philippians 3 to hear a clear call for believers to move beyond spiritual infancy and press toward maturity in Christ. That journey often begins with quiet discomfort: what once satisfied feels empty, conviction rises over what the culture has normalized, relationships feel misaligned, and God keeps returning to the one thing you have not yet surrendered.

The path higher is rarely straightforward. Like Abraham leaving home without a destination, or Elijah hearing God in a still, small voice, deeper faith often requires obedience before understanding. Seasons of divine silence are not signs of abandonment. They may be seasons of testing, refining, or spiritual warfare waged on your behalf, as seen in Daniel's 21 days of unanswered prayer. Going higher with God will cost something, but the invitation is to a deeper life, where the peace that passes understanding becomes more real than any burden you were carrying.

In Week 9 of our Wednesday Night Bible Study through Hebrews, we dive into Hebrews 7 and 8 and explore the significance of Melchizedek, the priesthood of Christ, and what it means for Jesus to be better, greater, and superior.

Beginning with Abraham's encounter with Melchizedek, we examine the meaning of righteousness and peace, the relationship between the Levitical priesthood and the priesthood of Christ, and why the law could reveal our shortcomings without ultimately redeeming us.

This study also takes a closer look at a practical question many believers wrestle with today: What does the Bible teach about tithing and giving under the New Covenant? Through a discussion of Abraham, the law, grace, generosity, and the heart behind our giving, we consider the difference between giving out of obligation and giving out of gratitude for God's goodness.

Jesus isn’t just a priest. He’s our eternal High Priest. In this week’s Wednesday night Hebrews study, we look at why His priesthood comes from the order of Melchizedek rather than the line of Aaron, and why that makes it unlike anything the world had ever seen.

Fully God and not a created being, Jesus humbled Himself to take on human flesh, the greatest act of love in history. In the Garden of Gethsemane He cried out to the Father with tears, which means He knows exactly what it feels like to pray in anguish. Because He walked through suffering without ever sinning, He’s uniquely able to intercede for us. And through His sacrifice, our sins aren’t just covered. They’re completely removed.

This message challenges us to pray with bold, persistent desperation, trusting that our High Priest is interceding for us right now, and to move past the basics of faith into a deeper life in God’s Word.

What does it mean to be a faithful church in a culture that wants Christianity without the cost?

In Week 2 of our Counter the Culture series, we look at the seeker-friendly movement. It was often well-intentioned, but it raises a hard question: if we remove every obstacle that keeps people from coming to church, is it still a church?

Jesus rebuked the lukewarm church in Laodicea for becoming indistinguishable from the culture around it, and that warning still speaks today. Faithfulness isn't measured by how many seats are filled. It's measured by whether we're making true disciples.

The gospel was never designed to make everyone comfortable. God's Word both liberates and confronts, and we need both. The church is countercultural by design, and we're called to hunger for God deeply, not consume Christianity casually.

This week's challenge is to move from being a consumer of church to being a contributor to the Kingdom.

God has been offering a deep, eternal rest since before the world began — and most people miss it for the same reason the Israelites did: unbelief that leads to disobedience.

In this week's Hebrews Bible study, we unpack what Scripture means by rest — a practical rest from weariness that Jesus offers in the middle of life's chaos, and a deeper, eternal rest the Sabbath itself was always pointing toward. Jesus fulfilled the Sabbath completely, which is why Sunday isn't a new Sabbath but the Lord's Day — a starting point of worship, not a finish line of work.

Entering that rest takes two real efforts: believing and surrendering. It means trusting God with the outcomes you've been white-knuckling, and sincerely wanting His will more than your own. Because Jesus walked through hunger, temptation, and suffering as a human being, He isn't a distant God. He's a High Priest who understands your weakness and invites you to come boldly, with confidence you'll find mercy and grace exactly when you need it.

The American church has drifted far from its biblical design, and Jesus' letters to the seven churches in Revelation show how seriously He takes that drift. The lukewarm church at Laodicea looks a lot like much of mainstream evangelical Christianity today: a church that blends into the culture it was called to change, and loses its influence and purpose in the process.

In this first message of our new series, Counter the Culture: The Uncompromising Church, we look at a better model in Acts 2: steadfast doctrine, genuine fellowship, prayer, generosity, and simplicity of heart. That church didn't draw a crowd with comfort or entertainment. People were actually being saved. Faithfulness isn't maintenance; it's multiplication, one disciple investing in another until the kingdom advances in ways no single pastor or program could.

The question worth sitting with: are we consumers of church, or true disciples of Jesus?
