One of the most common metaphors in the Bible for a Christian is a soldier. This picture is never of a peacetime soldier but a wartime soldier. The life of being a disciple of Jesus and fulfilling the mission of making disciples of all nations is not the life of shiny brass buttons, spit-shined boots and marching in parades. Instead, it is the life of knowing there is a very real enemy who is ever seeking to steal, kill, and destroy in my life and in the lives of those around me.

These chapters in my daily Bible reading it seemed like there’s a contrast between the world of kings and the world of prophets or regular people. A mountain valley contrast. On the mountain there are kings going to war over sheep. But in the valley ordinary people are about to lose everything. As I was reading this it almost felt like the Lord was giving an invitation to choose which “world” we want to spend our time worrying about.
