In the story of Esther, her cousin Mordecai goes from being lowly and abased, a man of sorrows who sat outside the king's gate in sackcloth and ashes... to being high and lifted up, exalted above all his brothers and seated at the right hand of the majestic king of Persia. In this sense, he stands a prefigure of the perfected Messiah, the one who was a lowly man of sorrows, but whom God raised up to sit at the right hand of majesty on high. Esther's story reminds us of the grand story of what God has done through Christ.
