Matthew 8:5-13

Healing the Centurion’s servant

Intro

A. THE REQUEST OF THE CENTURION (Matthew 8:5-7)

    1. The centurion at Capernaum is a Gentile (Matthew 8:5).

    2. The request of the Centurion (Matthew 8:6).

    3. Jesus’ response (Matthew 8:7). “I will come and heal him.”

B. THE FAITH OF THE CENTURION (Matthew 8:8-9).

    1. humble faith (Matthew 8:8a) - Cf. Acts 10:28; John 18:28

    2. strong faith (Matthew 8:8b) -

    3. reasoned faith (Matthew 8:9) -

C. THE RESPONSE OF JESUS (Matthew 8:10-13).

    1. Jesus marveled (Matthew 8:10).

        a. “Truly I say to you,”

        b. “I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.”

    2. Jesus prophesied (Matthew 8:11-12).

        a. Many from EAST and WEST and recline with the patriarchs in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 8:11). Genesis 12:3; Zechariah 2:11; Micah 4:2; Joel 2:28; Amos 9:11-12; Isaiah 25:6-8.

        b. The sons of the kingdom (Jews) will be “cast into the outer darkness, in that place will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:12).

    3. Jesus healed the centurion’s servant immediately (Matthew 8:13).

APPLICATION

    1. Compassion for the despised and rejected. 1 Corinthians 6:11.

    2. The importance of faith.

    3. The Gentile Mission.

Matthew 8:1-4

Cleansing of the Leper

Intro

A. THE REQUEST OF THE LEPER (Matthew 8:1-2).

    1. Large crowds followed Jesus (Matthew 8:1).

    2. The leper approached Jesus.

        a. Luke 5:12 says the man was “covered with leprosy.”

        b. Leprosy was considered an uncleanness, it defiled.

        c. Leprosy was looked upon as a curse or judgment of God.

    3. The leper bowed down before Him (Matthew 8:2).

    4. Request: “Lord, if you are willing, You can make me clean.”

B. THE RESPONSE OF THE SAVIOR (Matthew 8:3-4).

    1. Jesus touched the leper.

    2. Jesus cleansed the leper. “I am willing; be cleansed.”

        a. Immediate healing

        b. Complete healing.

    3. Jesus instructs the leper.

        a. Tell no one.

        b. Go, show yourself to the priest. Leviticus 14:2

        c. Present the offering. Leviticus 14:4-32.

Two Foundations

Intro

A. THE WISE BUILDER (Matthew 7:24-25).

    1. The house -

    2. The character of a wise man who builds on the rock (Matthew 7:24).

        a. Hears the Word.

        b. Obeys the Word.

    3. The consequences of building on the rock (Matthew 7:25).

        a. Blasted by the storm.

        b. It does not fall during storms of life or in the judgment.

B. THE FOOLISH BUILDER (Matthew 7:26-27).

    1. The character of the foolish man who builds on the sand (Matthew 7:26).

        a. Hears the Word.

        b. Does not obey the Word.

    2. The consequences of building on the sand (Matthew 7:27).

        a. Blasted by the storm.

        b. Great was its fall.

Matthew 7:21-23

Counterfeit Disciples

Intro

A. THE COUNTERFEITS CONSIDERED (Matthew 7:21).

    1. “Lord, Lord.”

    2. True faith has obedience to the will of My Father.

B. THE COUNTERFEITS COUNTED (Matthew 7:22a).

    1. “Many”

    2. Judgment day. “on that day”. Cf. Matthew 25:41; John 5:22

C. THE COUNTERFEITS’ CONFESSION (Matthew 7:22).

    1. “Lord, Lord.”

    2. “In Your name did we not prophesy?”

    3. “In your name cast out demons?”

    4. “In your name perform many miracles?”

D. THE COUNTERFEITS CONDEMNED (Matthew 7:23).

    1. Christ’s confession - “I never knew you.” Verdict.

    2. Christ’s condemnation - “Depart from Me.” Sentence.

    3. Christ’s confirmation - “you who practice lawlessness.” Evidence.

Conclusion

    1. Being gifted does not mean you are going to heaven.

    2. Refutes any notion of works salvation.

    3. Let us all examine our hearts to see if our faith is alive.

    4. Assurance of salvation requires evidence of a changed heart.

Matthew 7:15-20

Beware of False Teachers

Intro

A. BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS (Matthew 7:15).

    1. Deceptive (Matthew 7:15). Dressed in sheep’s clothing.

    2. Dangerous (Matthew 7:15). Inwardly are ravenous wolves.

B. IDENTIFICATION BY THEIR FRUITS (Matthew 7:16-20).

    1. “fruits” -

    2. Illustration: Grapes and figs

    3. Illustration: good tree and bad tree (Matthew 7:17-19).

        a. The character of the tree determines the character of the fruit (Matthew 7:17-18).

        b. Inability asserted - “cannot” (Matthew 7:18). One cannot change his nature.

        c. Final destination of bad trees (Matthew 7:19).

            (1) cut down - Matthew 3:10

            (2) cast into the fire -

    4. Repetition: false prophets are known by their fruits (Matthew 7:20).

C. APPLICATION for today - Beware of . . .

    1. Wrong prophecies.

    2. Wrong gospel.

    3. Wrong teaching.

    4. Wrong lifestyle.

Mt. 7:13-14

Enter through the Narrow Gate

Intro

A. WE MUST ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM.

1. “enter” is used of “entering the kingdom of heaven” (5:20, 7:21; 18:3; 19:23-24; 23:13) or entering into life (18:8-9; 19:17).

2. The aorist imperative stresses the great importance and urgency of entering through the narrow gate.

B. TWO KINDS OF GATES.

1. The symbolism of a gate.

2. “Narrow” - Not “straight”. Symbolizes conversion through faith in Christ.

3. “Wide” - symbolizes the world’s religions.

C. TWO KINDS OF ROADS/WAYS.

1. Metaphor - both roads/ways here would refer to the following lifestyle of those who enter through the respective gates.

2. broad way - This is the lifestyle of the ungodly.

3. narrow way (v. 14) - the lifestyle of a disciple.

D. TWO KINDS OF DESTINIES.

1. Destruction - Not annihilation, but eternal hell.

2. Life - Eternal life, abundant life, joy, heavenly fellowship with God, angels and God’s people.

E. TWO KINDS OF PEOPLE

1. Many - Matt. 22:14.

2. Few - “few who find it” (v. 14).

Conclusion - Choose life!
