DeFuniak Springs Police responded to U.S. Highway 90 East near Davis Lane in reference to a traffic crash in which the vehicles hit head on.  Police Officers and Detectives, along with Firefighters from the DeFuniak Springs Fire Department arrived to find an SUV overturned.  Witnesses advised that a Red Jeep SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed heading east in the westbound lane of U.S. Highway 90 when it hit head on with a Silver Mazda Minivan.

18-year-old Sedric Deon Brooks Jr. was sentenced by Circuit Judge W. Joel Boles to 20 years in state prison to be followed by four years of probation. Brooks pled no contest in June to three counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and one count of principal to robbery without a weapon.

Authorities tried to restrain the man but he kept trying to pull away. When a deputy tried to ask him questions, he “could only respond with a whooping sound.” The deputy believed he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Lifeguards on a wave runner searched the area where the man had been seen and found his body at the bottom of the Gulf ten minutes later, in approximately 12 feet of water. After getting him to shore, medics began CPR and were able to get the man’s pulse back.

He was taken via helicopter to Baptist Hospital in Gulf Breeze, where he later died.
