Calhoun native McCartney Kessler, a 24-year-old tennis player, achieved a significant milestone at the Australian Open by winning her first Grand Slam singles match. Ranked No. 202, she rallied from a set down to defeat France's Fiona Ferro. Kessler displayed poise, aggressive play, and relentless defense, ultimately dominating the third set and securing a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Her impressive performance follows a successful year, including a $60,000 pro tournament win in Rome, Ga. With this achievement, Kessler's ranking is expected to rise into the Top 200, marking a pivotal moment in her tennis career.
STORY 2: UPDATE: Skydiving Accident Victim Identified as FAA Continues Investigation
A skydiving accident resulted in the death of Nicolay Grushin, 47, from Bonney Lake, Washington, in Polk County. The incident occurred when Grushin landed in a field off Coaling Road east of Cedartown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the investigation, focusing on parachute packing and flight rules. The FAA does not determine the cause of skydiving accidents leading to fatalities. Polk County, home to various skydiving facilities, awaits further details from the ongoing investigation. The incident highlights the risks associated with skydiving activities.
STORY 3: MLK Day Celebration Focuses on Unity
On Martin Luther King Jr.'s 95th birthday, Friendship Baptist Church hosted a celebration, "Living the Dream, It Starts with Me," after a hiatus since 2018 due to the COVID pandemic. The event featured musical performances, speakers, and an interpretive dancer, paying tribute to King's legacy. The theme emphasized unity and personal responsibility. Guest speakers, including pastors and ministers, shared scripture and messages of gratitude. Local leaders, such as City Councilman Ray Denmon, sheriff candidate Rodney Curtis, and Chief Tony Pyle, attended. A proclamation was presented, and the Martin Luther King Community Award honored James Harris for his community service upon his retirement at age 70. The celebration continued with a reception at the McConnell Road Community Center.

STORY 4: Shannon woman faces elder abuse charge
In Shannon, Georgia, 35-year-old Jessica Lynn Randle faces charges of felony cruelty to a person over 65, misdemeanor criminal trespass, and simple battery under the Family Violence Act. The incident involved Randle allegedly pouring Sprite on an 80-year-old woman's head and slamming a drinking glass, causing it to shatter at a residence on Baker Street. Both Randle and the victim are listed as residents of the same home. Randle is currently held in Floyd County Jail on Monday, with a probation hold in place.
STORY 5: Fulton County DA Speaks Out on Misconduct Allegations
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis addressed allegations of an improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired for the election interference case against Donald Trump. Willis defended Wade's qualifications without explicitly mentioning the allegations during her speech at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta. The accusations, outlined in a motion filed on behalf of a defendant, claim Willis and Wade had a clandestine relationship and misused public funds for vacations.
