At the Hanford cleanup site [in southeast Washington], 30 containers of radioactive tank waste were disposed of in a new, specialized landfill this week. This final disposal marks an accomplishment sought ever since Hanford cleanup began. N-W-P-B’s senior correspondent Anna King has more.

Hanford is celebrating. At the nuclear site in southeast Washington, the first several large containers of radioactive waste have been moved into a dump this week [April 8].

The move gets the waste out of aging underground tanks at Hanford. A new factory has been binding up the radioactive waste in glass, to help it from escaping into the environment.

Suzanne Dahl, [SUE-zane Doll] the Washington Department of Ecology’s top tank waste expert, says it’s a big emotional week.

[Makah Tribe prepares for whale hunt while federal permit remains in limbo

It seemed like getting a whaling permit would be little more than a formality after the Makah tribe got a waiver to revive its traditional hunt under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. ... For more than a year now, the tribe’s permit application has gone unanswered.

But the Makahs say they are doing what they can to get ready to hunt as soon as this summer.
