This week, we are quite serious as we discuss the recent suggestion of Australia becoming a republic. We examine the process required to write a new Australian constitution to suit our 21st Century world separated from Great Britain, and the incorporation of new concepts like recognition of our original peoples, respect of diversity and modern social constructs. It won’t be a quick ‘word-replacement’ re-write; the process should start soon?

Other legacies left for us to manage are the huge loss of Australian troops 100 years ago in WWI at Passchendaele, and the atomic fall-out from the 1950s atomic bomb testings in the ‘emptiness’ of outback Australia.

We consider the role of trans-folk in armed forces and how hate speech can be very toxic.

On a slightly lighter note, we are reminded about Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy stories with their elements of horror as part of the moral.
