Clarence Avant, ‘The Black Godfather’ of music, dies at 92.

Clarence Avant, the executive and businessman known as “The Black Godfather” of music and entertainment, died Sunday at 92.

Avant died at his Los Angeles home, his son Alex Avant, daughter Nicole Avant and son-in-law Ted Sarandos shared in a statement Monday.

“It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant,” the family said. “Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as ‘The Black Godfather’ in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports.”

Avant’s family added: “Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.”

Avant’s first foray into steering a record label came in 1967 with Venture Records, originally founded as an outlet for the soul recording artists on MGM Records. Venture Records lasted only two years, but Avant was ready to jump to his next assignment: helping to broker the sale of legendary Stax Records, which he did in 1968, before founding Sussex Records. Sussex, however, folded in 1975 after the IRS auctioned off the company’s assets due to $48,000 in federal tax liens.

In 2019, Avant received the Industry Icon Award as the honoree at fellow music mogul Clive Davis’ annual Pre-Grammy Gala.

“Clarence Avant was truly one of a kind. His passing is a great loss of someone who is irreplaceable,” Davis told USA TODAY in a statement Monday. “Clarence’s extraordinary contribution to music and the barriers he broke throughout his career are unrivaled. He was the mentor to all Black executives in the music industry for decades, providing invaluable guidance and support while always standing up for equal rights. Clarence was humane and fair and inspired love and respect from all who knew him. I personally loved him and will miss him forever.”

NEW YORK - Chaos erupted Friday afternoon after a large crowd gathered at Manhattan's Union Square Park for livestreamer Kai Cenat's meet-and-greet and giveaway.

Things spiraled out of control at around 3 p.m., when some in the crowd could be seen tearing down construction barricades and hurling objects, including throwing some objects at responding police officers. As the chaos unfolded, a vehicle, believed to have been carrying Cenat, attempted to leave. The crowd could be seen mobbing it. It moved slowly through throngs of people before eventually speeding off, with people clinging to the sides and back. At least three people could be seen tumbling off the vehicle onto the pavement as it sped away.

Cenat was taken into police custody for questioning at around 5 p.m. He did not have a permit for the event or preplan it with police.

Police confirmed Friday evening that Cenat will be charged with at least two counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly, along with a few other charges.

Earlier in the day, Cenat posted on social media that he would be there in person for the giveaway. He has more than 9 million combined followers on Twitch and other social media platforms.

"Once the people for the giveaway started coming out, that's when, like, things started to get out of control because people started pushing and stuff," one witness said.

"They didn't even get to give away. They left right when everything happened," said one individual.

The civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court claims Lizzo pressured the dancers to engage with nude performers at a club in Amsterdam and shamed one of them for her weight gain before firing her.

Plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez make numerous charges including sexual, religious and racial harassment, disability discrimination, assault and false imprisonment. Representatives for Lizzo didn’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment on the lawsuit.

The court filing claims that after performing a concert in Amsterdam, Lizzo and her crew attended a sexually themed show at a club in the city’s notorious Red Light District where “Lizzo began inviting cast members to take turns touching the nude performers.” During the show, Lizzo led a chant pressuring Davis to touch the breasts of one of the nude women performing at the club, the filing states.

Stephen A. Smith believes Errol Spence Jr. took such a beating against Terence Crawford that he should now consider retirement. Spence suffered the first defeat of his professional career following a ninth-round TKO loss to Terence Crawford in their welterweight title unification clash this past weekend.

However, it was the manner of the defeat that shocked just about everyone in the combat sports world as Spence — who had never been knocked down before — was not only outclassed; he was battered and bloodied by Crawford who scored three knockdowns on the now-former three-belt welterweight champion. It certainly shocked Smith who had at one point prior to the fight, had Spence beating Crawford. Now, he feels the 33-year-old should consider stopping boxing entirely.

“I believe that Errol Spence Jr. should consider retirement,” Smith said on First Take (via ESPN Ringside). Speaking of a rematch, it looks like we'll get to see just that as Errol Spence Jr. revealed post-fight that he not only planned on activating his rematch clause, but that it could happen before the end of the year.

The weight would have to be decided, but clearly, “The Truth” has no plans to retire just yet.

Sinéad O’Connor, Irish singer who rose to fame with ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’ dies at 56

Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the singer’s family said in a statement to The Irish Times and the BBC. A cause of death was not given.

The artist, who courted controversy throughout her long career, rose to fame with her 1990 rendition of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that same year.

Her death comes one year after her 17-year-old son, Shane O’Connor, died of an apparent suicide. She announced his passing in January 2022.

For much of her career, she spoke candidly and openly about her spiritual life, political views and struggles with mental health, which she detailed in her 2021 memoir “Rememberings.”

In 2018, O’Connor converted to Islam and changed her name to “Shuhada.”

“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim,” she wrote on Twitter on October 2018. “This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant.”

There was no kidnapping’: Carlee Russell apologizes after admitting hoax!

Carlee Russell admitted she did not see a toddler wandering on the side of the highway and lied about being kidnapped in a hoax that set off a nationwide effort to find her, an attorney for the Alabama woman said Monday.

Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Derzis read the statement provided by Russell’s attorney during a news conference, in which the 25-year-old nursing student said she was not abducted as the nation was led to believe when she disappeared July 13. Russell said she had not left the Hoover area.

She returned home about 49 hours after a call to 911 reporting seeing the child on the interstate.

“My client apologizes for her actions to this community, to the volunteers who were searching for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies as well,” the statement said.

The police department is consulting with the district attorney’s office regarding potential criminal charges, according to Derzis.

Authorities had said they were unable to verify initial statements made by Russell after she returned home two days later.

Russell’s parents, Talitha and Carlos Russell, told “TODAY” last week that their daughter was not in a “good state” when she returned and appeared to have undergone serious trauma.

“There were moments when she physically had to fight for her life, and there were moments when she had to mentally fight for her life,” Talitha Russell said. “She made it back.”

Son of Philly rapper Gillie Da Kid killed in triple shooting, source says According to NBC News 10 Philadelphia

The son of Philadelphia rap artist and podcaster Gillie Da Kid was killed in a triple shooting Thursday night, a source confirmed with NBC10.

The shooting occurred on the 5800 block of Mascher Street at 8:24 p.m. in Philadelphia, police said.

A 25-year-old man was shot once in the back and taken to the hospital by police. He was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m.

A 28-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were also shot and transported to the hospital. Both were placed in stable condition.

Police told NBC10 one of the victims ran over to a nearby home and 10 spent shell casings were located at the scene.

No arrests have been made and no weapons were recovered.
