In this epic collaboration, Jake is joined with three special co-hosts: Dusti, and Sara and Kadey from Not So Molly Mormon podcast! Jake tells the ladies about the Mormon Manson, Ervil LeBaron, who orchestrated the murders of several of his own family members and never lifted a finger to do it himself. Not So Molly Mormon also covered this story on their podcast. The two complement each other very well so if you want more, go listen to Episode 131 on their podcast. This is a two-parter, so you'll have to wait til next week to get the rest of the juicy details. TW: graphic descriptions of murder.
This episode is the beginning of a series brought to you by Jake. At the beginning of this little journey, Jake tells Dusti about a hoax played on Joseph Smith: the Kinderhook plates. They were fabricated plates meant to catch J Dawg for the scam artist he was. This is only the beginning of the rabbit holes Jake will take you down in the weeks to come.
For the end of Pride month, Jake and Dusti read an article from LDS Living written by a Mormon mom giving advice on what to say when a family member comes out as gay. It's every bit as cringy as you'd expect.
This week's special guest is Stephen (aka @exmormon_rhetoric). Jake and Stephen both have military backgrounds. Stephen's story and circumstance is different in that his wife and kids are still active in the church while he has left. Listen to how he has found ways to cope as he continues to deconstruct while maintaining a healthy relationship with his family. They get a bit spiritual and a few tangents ensue. This one is a longer episode, but it is well worth it! Enjoy!
Jake's guest on this week's episode is Shirelle (@actual_agency). Shirelle tells her story about being a Mormon woman who followed the formula and ultimately left the church. She talks about the pressures of every day life as a Mormon woman, how leaving has affected her relationships with her family and with herself, and what agency actually means to her.
June is Pride Month for the LGBTQ+ community, and Jake and Dusti are here to talk all about it. They discuss some of the history of Pride and what makes a good ally for members of the queer community. Hopefully this episode will help you understand why we have Pride and learn a bit about how you can be a better ally.
Jake is joined again with Kadey, one-half of the Not So Molly Mormon podcast. They read a talk that was given by Rusty Nelson about FOMO and, essentially, Mormon exceptionalism. This talk was so ridiculous both Jake and Kadey, as well as a few listeners, were stunned that it was not satire. Evolution and the plan of salvation (barf) are discussed at length. Enjoy!
Jake and Dusti discuss the cliques and "cool kids" in the exMo community. They also discuss the susceptibility of exams to fall for charismatic leaders and toxic, structured communities. Digressions include: cringey Mormon missionary TikToks, tattoos that bring the wrath of Sky Daddy, and a brief discussion about segregation in the church. Jake gets a bit tipsy and there are some technical difficulties, but stick around because it is worth it!
Not So Peter Priesthood is back with special guest Dusti. Jake and his emotional support Canadian talk about the Mormon dating app, Mutual. They share reviews, terrible church-oriented pick-up lines, myths about the app, and online dating stories. There are a few tangents but mostly just a lot of laughing.
On this week's episode, Jake and Dusti talk all about pornography, specifically Mormon pornography. Not only do they talk about the fetishizing of Mormons in porn, but also how the leaders of the church demonize pornography. Things obviously get a little raunchy and end with a lovely quote from Boyd K Packer. Digressions include Paul Walker and, naturally, masturbation. The underlying theme is that everyone needs therapy. Go release your valves after you've listened to this episode!
