Amie Skwiat literally saved her own life.

She was on the precipice of a downward spiral - doctor after doctor had run a multitude of tests, but she never actually felt 100%. After years of traditional medicine, she still struggled to get out of bed, she was constantly fatigued and she felt like she was missing out on her kids lives.

It is time to shed light on a critically important aspect of women's health you may not be aware of: pre-natal and postnatal mental health for women of color and culture.

The maternal health and wellness rate in the United States are very poor. We have one of the highest mortality rates for mothers i.e. in the year after giving birth, black women have a mortality rate 4 TIMES GREATER than that of white women.

When I first met Tina Hunt, I had no idea what she had been through.

When I sat down for coffee with Carolyn Soto Jackson, little did I realize that she had been through a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder. But it was one of the things that she said to me during our chat that really stuck with me: "My nutritionist literally saved my life."

That's why I want to share Carolyn's vulnerable and inspiring story of how she first began with disordered eating and critical self- judgement, as well as the intervention that ultimately ended with her being posed with a question: will she eat or will she be force fed through a tube?
