In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),

Paul writes for a third time to the church in Corinth. In His second letter, he asked them to do a very difficult thing. They have done it. They obeyed Paul’s instruction and sought to submit to Jesus.

The rivalries that have been setting up in the church because its leaders became preoccupied with who could prove themselves the most wise, the most gifted, and the most influential, threaten to produce a negative aftermath.

Paul is concerned now that they fully understand what they have done as a church. Yes, they have obeyed Paul’s instruction, but they must understand that he is teaching them how to live in the new covenant.

If the church does not understand how the Spirit gives life and Jesus provides reconciliation, then even their obedience in the difficult situation they are in will fall short of the joy and refreshment God wants to produce in them.
