Utica, USA – On April 29, 2026 at approximately 2:20 AM, Utica Police were alerted by a security officer at the Alexander Pirnie Federal Building about a possible stolen military vehicle.
The security officer reported seeing a suspicious man in the area and, after reviewing surveillance footage, discovered that a large military-style vehicle parked near 221 Oriskany Street was missing. The footage showed the man entering the vehicle and driving away.
Officers later located the vehicle on West Street and attempted to stop it. The driver did not comply, initially moving slowly back and forth before suddenly accelerating toward officers, forcing them to move their vehicles and themselves to avoid being hit.
The vehicle fled south on West Street, turned onto South Street, and then continued onto Genesee Street. On the 200 block, it struck a utility pole, severed it, hit a fire hydrant, and caused major damage to 287 Genesee Street. During the pursuit, an officer attempted to break the driver’s side window, but the vehicle sped off, throwing the officer off and causing injuries that required treatment at Wynn Hospital.
The truck continued southbound, driving recklessly across lanes, through Oneida Square, and onto the 1600 block of Genesee Street, where it crashed into a tree and became inoperable.
Officers climbed onto the vehicle again and tried to break the windows. After several moments, the driver exited, and officers struggled before taking him into custody. Another officer was injured during the arrest, suffering serious hand and wrist injuries.
The suspect was identified as Daniel Passino-Brazeau, 29, with no known address, and was transported to the Utica Police Department.
Due to the damage, parts of Genesee Street were closed, with Dakin Street to South Street in both directions remaining shut because of heavy debris.
He faces charges including two counts of second-degree assault, third-degree grand larceny, driving while intoxicated, unlawful fleeing a police officer, and multiple traffic violations. Additional charges are expected.
Both injured officers have been treated and released, though one has been placed out of work due to head and body injuries.
