The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has expressed concern over ArcelorMittal South Africa's announcement of possible job cuts at its mills in Newcastle and Vereeniging, which could affect around 3,500 jobs. The steelmaker blames prolonged weak economic conditions, structural issues and uncompetitive conditions for its decision to close some operations.
