In this episode, Karli Burridge interviews Dr. Stephen Devries about nutrition and lifestyle training for clinicians. They discuss the lack of nutrition training in medical education, and how, as Director of the Outpatient Heart Center at the University of Illinois, Dr. Devries became interested in nutrition for cardiac patients. They also discuss how the integration of nutrition and lifestyle into the medical curriculum is evolving, and Dr. Devries provides some great nutrition education resources for clinicians and their patients.
Dr. Stephen Devries is a preventive cardiologist and Executive Director of the educational nonprofit Gaples Institute as well as Adjunct Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. At the Gaples Institute, he has directed the development of award-winning nutrition learning programs targeted at both professional and public-facing audiences.
His training in Internal Medicine was at the University of Michigan; Cardiovascular subspecialty training at Washington University in St. Louis, and Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona with Dr. Andrew Weil.
Previously, he has served as the Director of the Outpatient Heart Center at the University of Illinois and later, as Associate Professor at Northwestern University.
He is one of the few authors invited to write chapters for both the most widely read textbooks in both conventional cardiology as well as in integrative medicine. Additionally, I authored "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Cholesterol and co-edited the textbook "Integrative Cardiology" with Dr. James Dalen.
His work in nutrition and integrative care has been featured on National Public Radio and PBS.
