  • Proverbs: Seeking God's Guidance

    Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. (Prov. 3:5-8)

    There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. (Prov. 14:12)

    The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. (Prov. 16:9)

    Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. (Prov 11:14)

    Your word is a lamp to my feet  and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

  • Proverbs: What To Do With Your Wealth

    Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is  than a fattened ox and hatred with it. (Prov. 15:16-17)

    Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways. (Prov. 28:6)

    Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist.5 When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. (Prov 23:4-5)

    One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;  another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. (Prov. 13:7)

    A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children,  but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous. (Prov 13:22)

    Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him. (Prov 14:31)

  • Proverbs: The Pursuit of Wisdom By Being Productive

    The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is HASTY comes only to poverty. (Prov. 21:5)

    In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. (Prov. 14:23)

    Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house. (Prov. 24:27)

    Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. (Prov. 15:22)

    Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. (Prov. 16:3)

    • Jesus Betrayed and Seized

      Mark 14:43-52

      43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left him and fled.51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

      5. Proverbs: Fathers, Be Self-Controlled!

        Proverbs 25:28

        A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

        Proverbs 16:32

        Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

      6. Look for the Exits

        1 Corinthians 10:1-13

        1 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[a] that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown[b] in the wilderness.

        6 Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ[c] to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

      7. Proverbs: Get to Work and Go to Sleep

        Proverbs 6:6-11/Psalm 127: 1-2

        Proverbs 6:6-11

        6  Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.

        7  Without having any chief, officer, or ruler,

        8  she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.

        9  How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?

        10  A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,

        11  and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

        Psalm 127: 1-2

        1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

        2  It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.

      8. Proverbs: The Pursuit of Wisdom Through Words

        Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. (Prov. 18:21)

        The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things. (Prov. 15:28)

        To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is! (Prov. 15:23)

        Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. (Prov. 12:19)

        Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. (Prov. 27:2)

      9. Light in the Dark

        Sermon Text: Ephesians 5:7-14

        7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

        “Awake, O sleeper,

        and arise from the dead,
        and Christ will shine on you.”

        4. The Woman Who Fears the Lord

          10  An excellent wife who can find?

          She is far more precious than jewels.
          11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
          and he will have no lack of gain.
          12 She does him good, and not harm,
          all the days of her life.
          13 She seeks wool and flax,
          and works with willing hands.
          14 She is like the ships of the merchant;
          she brings her food from afar.
          15 She rises while it is yet night
          and provides food for her household
          and portions for her maidens.
          16 She considers a field and buys it;
          with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
          17 She dresses herself with  strength
          and makes her arms strong.
          18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
          Her lamp does not go out at night.
          19 She puts her hands to the distaff,
          and her hands hold the spindle.
          20 She opens her hand to the poor
          and reaches out her hands to the needy.
          21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
          for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
          22 She makes bed coverings for herself;
          her clothing is fine linen and purple.
          23 Her husband is known in the gates
          when he sits among the elders of the land.
          24 She makes linen garments and sells them;
          she delivers sashes to the merchant.
          25 Strength and dignity are her clothing,
          and she laughs at the time to come.
          26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,
          and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
          27 She looks well to the ways of her household
          and does not eat the bread of idleness.
          28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
          her husband also, and he praises her:
          29 “Many women have done excellently,
          but you surpass them all.”
          30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
          but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
