  • “GROW UP: Outwardly Compassionate - ‘A Narrow-minded view of Jesus’”
Matthew 11:1-11 (ESV)1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there toteach and preach in their cities.2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by hisdisciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look foranother?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see:5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deafhear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “Whatdid you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What thendid you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear softclothing are in kings' houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, Itell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way beforeyou.’”11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greaterthan John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greaterthan he.

  • “Gospel and our suffering” - Retreat Sun morning
Hebrews 12:3-113Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary orfainthearted.4In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.5And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son,do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6Forthe Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7It is for discipline that you have to endure.God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?8If you are left without discipline,in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.9Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject tothe Father of spiritsand live?10For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.11For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yieldsthe peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

1 Peter 2:13-1713Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,14or to governors as sent by himto punish those who do evil andto praise those who do good.15For this is the will of God,that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.16Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servantsof God.17Honor everyone.Love the brotherhood.Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Ephesians 6:5-95Bondservants,obey your earthly masterswith fear and trembling, with a sincere heart,as you would Christ,6not by the way of eye-service, aspeople-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,7rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man,8knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.9Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing thathe who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and thatthere is no partiality with him.

  • “GROW UP - Godly”
John 14:15-27 (ESV)15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit oftruth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and theworld will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And hewho loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself tohim.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifestyourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me,he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him andmake our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all thingsand bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave withyou; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not yourhearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

  • “Going in the right direction in life”
James 4:13-17 (ESV)13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such atown and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do notknow what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appearsfor a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, wewill live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All suchboasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for himit is sin.
