We had to do a mid-week show because of the Topsy-Turvey week that we have already had in college football. The coaching carousel continues as Brian Kelly in a surprising move leaves Notre Dame for LSU. We discuss the departure, the playoffs, and the etiquette of this move. Also as Washington Huskies fans, we had to get into the hire of DeBoer from Fresno State and the expectations along with disappointments.

College football playoff selection committee chair Gary Barta said. "Once the championship games wrap up … the protocol does include the ability for the committee to consider a player or a coach not being available. Should that have an effect on the outcome of a game, that can be considered. At this point, we’ll have to wait and see how that factors in.”

It sounds like even if everything breaks right for Notre Dame, they will be left out of the playoffs looking in. It’s amazing how the playoff committee controls the narrative. Lots to discuss have a listen and enjoy.

USC and Lincoln Riley snuck out the back door together when no one was looking. As the media and fans, we’re distracted with Riley possibly going to other teams such as Florida, LSU, or staying put at Oklahoma. The Trojans wrap up their big fish in Lincoln Riley. A hire that will not only help USC but bring relevance to the Pac-12. A relevance that only Oregon could provide.

Michigan finally gets their win over the Buckeyes. I don’t know what was more impressive…The way they played or the way they partied. A game they will remember in Ann Arbor for all the right reasons.

Imagine being a college football fan and not seeing Ohio State, a rising Utah, and perhaps even an Alabama not being in the playoffs? There are fans that would love it, but I’m not sure if the NCAA does. We all know they love their big names that bring in big money, but maybe this is exactly what football needs in order to finally make changes. They have until Dec. 12th to decide on expansion for next season. We’ll see what happens. We also discuss if this season is a trend or if this can be the norm.

Dori is passionate while discussing her Huskies and the loss they sustained at the hands of the cougars. It’s a great back and forth. Shout out to our buddy Derek Sparks who has continued his journey where we will all eventually end up one day. I know the former Apple Cup MVP for Washington State loved the game. RIP Derek Sparks.

Utah dismantled Oregon with a dominating performance this past weekend, and once again for the fifth consecutive season, the Pac-12 will not be a representative in the college football playoffs. A concern for college football as even Greg Sankey the SEC commissioner has been on record that their absence has not been good for the sport. Kudos to Kyle Whittingham and his Utes, as they show us once again that they are the class of the Pac-12. In his 18th season, coach Whittingham has led his team to the Pac-12 title game for the 3rdtime out of the last 4 seasons.

Former football coach Scott Laigo travels to Happy Valley and shares his experiences being there. One of the great stories he shares is Penn State coach James Franklin speaking to his team about the Zac Stacey incident and his message to his players.

In this week’s Student-Athletes Advocates tidbits, Scott gives advice to the 2023 class and what student-athletes need to be prepared for. A must listen.

As we wind down the regular season for college football, we look at one of the great rivalry weeks in sports. A game that began in 1900 and ended in a 5-5 tie. The Apple Cup is back. After not playing last year for the first time since 1944, Washington and Washington State renew their rivalry. A game that means everything for these two universities and their fan bases. This season a win for Washington State could lead to a Pac-12 title game. We share great stories and thoughts, from Drew Bledsoe, snowball fights, stuck cars in the snow, and frozen butt cheeks. What?! We also mentioned former 1994 Apple Cup MVP Derek Sparks and how we are thinking of our friend.

On November 14th, Jennifer Cohen, Athletic Director at the University of Washington fired football head coach Jimmy Lake after 13 games. The last time a coach at Washington had a shorter tenure was in 1956. Jimmy Lake, the successor to Chris Peterson, was supposed to pave the way for future Huskie’s glory. A reputation as being one of the top defensive coaches in college football was a young up-and-coming coach that should have cemented himself in Husky lore for years to come. That expectation came to a stunning halt after 13 games. 

There is much to unpack with this bold decision. Was Coach Lake over his head or was this decision made way too hastily? Did Coach Lake ever have a chance to succeed here in the Pacific Northwest, or were there certain individuals waiting for the first signs of failure to give them the excuse to be rid of Jimmy Lake?  

A great discussion covering many avenues, thoughts, and frustrations.

Legendary Coach Blaine “Shorty” Bennett talks football with us as we cover a variety of topics with the 3-time state champion and coach of the year. Shorty has written multiple articles on the fundamentals of throwing the football, training the quarterback, and passing schemes. In addition, he has developed training videos on pass catching and proper route running techniques for receivers. The All-Northwest Football Camps have received national recognition from ESPN, the New England Sports Network, and the NFL Game Day programs.

In 1972, Shorty and Mac Bledsoe (Drew Bledsoe’s father) started the All-Northwest Football Camp, which specialized in the training of quarterbacks and receivers. Throughout the camp’s 34 years, scores of quarterbacks and receivers went on to play at the collegiate level and several others were drafted and played in the NFL. A few from the state of Washington include Clint Didier - Washington Redskins, Steve Pelluer - Dallas Cowboys, Lake Dawson – Kansas City Chiefs, and Drew Bledsoe -New England Patriots. Drew was the #1 pick in the 1993 NFL draft.

We travel down memory lane, share laughs, and ask questions that we think are pertinent to today’s topics regarding football and more. Also, Scott Laigo, president of Student-Athletes Advocates discusses what student-athletes are doing to get noticed by coaches and what are some of those tools.

106-0 is the final. 13 passing touchdowns and a 2-point conversion up by 104 points. Some will say…if you don’t like it stop it. Others will say a coach is a teacher and their responsibility is to have their athletes learn bigger lessons than the final score. It’s a hot topic after head coach Mil’Von James from Inglewood High School ran up the score and refused to have a running clock after being up 59-0. We discuss coaches’ roles and sportsmanship.

The battle of Michigan versus Michigan State lived up to the hype. The Heisman hype… as Kenneth Walker III showcased himself on the biggest stage so far this season with a five-touchdown performance. As the Spartans rise up the charts, or should I say... poll. Harbaugh and his Wolverines once again are being asked can Jim get it done. Is he the right man for the job? As we’ve seen this season already, coaches don’t last. Coaches such as Clay Helton, Nick Rolovich, and recently Gary Patterson have all lost their jobs for a litany of reasons. We asked the question and discussed what happens to programs, student-athletes, and coaches’ families when fired during a season?

Speaking of possibly losing a job. Jimmy Lake and the Washington Huskies have struggled. Not only with their performance on the field, but also coaches comments off of it. As if the Pac-12 conference didn’t have enough problems, attendance is down and so is viewership. Why is that and what can be done?

Pitt quarterback, Kenny Pickett is rising up the Heisman Charts. The 4-year starter defeated Clemson this past weekend while breaking Alex Van Pelts completion record, and now has eyes set on Dan Marino’s career touchdown record. As Pittsburgh climbs up the AP Poll rankings, Clemson continues their surprising slide. A year that has seen Heisman hopefuls such as DJ Uiagalelei and Spencer Rattler struggle, Coaches Dori Bennett, Scott Laigo and I discuss if we can remember a year where players that have had so much hype, and yet had struggled so mightily.

Teams such as Washington have struggled offensively. They barely defeated Arizona and seem to be struggling in their Pro-Style offense. Do players prefer tempo, RPO’s, spread, over Pro-Style? Will a team's offensive philosophy impact a student-athlete decision to pick one school over the other?

Another college football week is in the books, and we start with the Washington Huskies. As they continue to disappoint. Once again there was a failure at the coaching and quarterback position. At this point, Dylan Morris is not capable of leading his team to a win as he continues to turn the ball over. The bread and butter of this team year after year has been their defense. A defense that is unrecognizable at this juncture of the season. As UCLA steamrolled them to a tune of 237 rushing yards. Is time running out for this staff on Montlake?

Speaking of time running out. It seems the clock has struck midnight on Nick Rolovich and his unvaccinated coaches. The Cougars coach may have won against the Cardinals this weekend, but his desire to remain unvaccinated has been a divisive topic for all Cougar fans at Pullman, WA.

The number two team in the country suffered a loss and the new AP Top 25 poll is out. Also, this week in our SAA Tidbits segment, Scott and Dori discuss the NCAA’s announcement to remove the minimum standardized test scores and what are those implications. Important information for our student-athletes and their parents.

Notre Dame defeats Wisconsin, as the Irish stay undefeated in the Shamrock Series and at Soldier Field. We discuss the win and the great defensive play led by their defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman.

Down goes Clemson. Down goes Texas A&M. As Sam Pittman and his Razorbacks have now claimed the state of Texas with two huge wins for a program that had lost 19 consecutive SEC games.
