• Why do you think God chooses Isaac, the younger brother, to be the child of promise rather than Ishmael, the older? How do we see this theme play out throughout Scripture?

• Abraham's entire household was circumcised, not just Abraham and his direct descendants. By belonging to Abraham's household, many who did not share in Hebrew blood were brought into the covenant. How does this point to the broader reach of the new covenant in Christ?

• In Genesis 16, we see God meeting Hagar at a spring of water, which points to the theme of men meeting their brides at a well. How does the encounter between Jesus and the woman at the well in John chapter 4 echo this theme?

•  In Genesis 15, Abram questions the “how” of God’s promises:  “what will you give me?” (v2) and “how am I to know?” (v8). Compare this with Luke 1:18. Why do you think Zechariah (an elderly man with a barren wife) is punished for asking the same question as Abram?

• God made promises to Abram that were not fulfilled for many generations. Not only did Abram die before entering the promised land, but several generations of his descendants knew nothing but slavery – lifelong slavery. For centuries, they were stuck in a state of spiritual stagnation. How does this redefine the meaning of patience? What allows us to keep hoping even when we have nothing to show for it?

• In chapter 9, Noah curses the Canaanites. Yet Abram consistently befriends Canaanites, blesses Canaanites, and goes out of his way to rescue people like Lot, who are associated with Canaanites. In New Covenant terms, Christian terms, what is Abram doing?
• What does Genesis 14 teach us about the bread and wine we receive from our Melchizedekian High Priest? What events precede Abram’s encounter with Melchizedek? What parallels can we draw to the New Covenant? 
• What sort of “brotherly conflict” are you facing right now (work, home, church, extended family)? What wisdom and/or guidance can you glean from the example of Abram’s humility, godliness, and courage?
