• The Hebrew word used to describe Joseph’s tunic is only used five times in the Bible – three in Genesis 37 and two in 2 Samuel 13 (Tamar’s “long robe”). Compare and contrast these two stories. How else are they related?

• How does the story of Joseph – in particular his suffering – shape our understanding of divine providence?

• Read Psalm 37:1-19. How do we see this theme of having learning patience playing out in the rest of the Old Testament? How about the New Testament?

• In Acts 12, an Edomite king attacks the Church, killing James and arresting Peter. However, the Israelite is delivered in an exodus/resurrection fashion (12:6-7), the Edomite king is struck down (12:22-23), and the Church grows (12:24). What can we learn from this regarding the growth and expansion of the Kingdom of God?

• Genesis shifts the question from‬‭ Who will inherit the covenant?‬‭ to‬‭ Who will be‬‭ faithful with the covenant inheritance?‬‭ In what ways does Jesus fulfill this calling where Israel’s sons‬ failed?‬
