GM Slides 7% After Beating Q2 Earnings Despite $1 Billion Tariff Hit, Warns of Steeper Impact Ahead

General Motors reported second-quarter earnings that surpassed analyst expectations, even as the automaker absorbed a $1.1 billion hit from tariffs – but it also warned about a coming steeper impact from tariffs moving into the second half of the year.

In her letter to shareholders, CEO Mary Barra emphasized GM’s resilience, stating:

To strengthen its domestic manufacturing base and reduce import exposure, GM announced $4 billion in new U.S. factory investments in June. The plan will expand capacity by 300,000 units across key high-margin models — pickups, SUVs, and crossovers — at plants in Michigan, Kansas, and Tennessee.

“This will help us satisfy unmet customer demand, greatly reduce our tariff exposure, and capture upside opportunities as we launch new models,” Barra wrote.

Currently, GM imports about half the vehicles it sells in the U.S., primarily from Mexico and South Korea. In contrast, rival Ford produces about 80% of its U.S. vehicles domestically. Ford is expected to report second-quarter earnings next week.

Meanwhile, Stellantis, which owns Jeep, said tariffs cost it €300 million in the first half of the year and warned that results in the second half of 2025 will be significantly affected. Shares in Stellantis and Ford both fell about 1% on Tuesday morning.

Trump Considering Eliminating Capital Gains Tax On Houses

President Donald Trump has confirmed that he is considering abolishing the capital gains tax on houses.

“We’re thinking about that,” Trump said on July 22 when asked if the administration is considering removing the tax to improve the U.S. housing market.

The U.S. government imposes a capital gains tax on the sale of homes. Tax rates for long-term capital gains—residential properties held for more than a year—depend on income and range from zero percent to 20 percent. Capital gains on homes owned for less than a year are taxed at the same rate as your ordinary income.

However, there are exemptions, with current law allowing homeowners selling their primary residence to exclude home sale profits of up to $250,000 for individual tax filers and up to $500,000 for joint filers.

Welcome News: Another Rescission Package Is Coming to Codify Spending Cuts on a Key Conservative Issue

BREAKING: Obama Judge Denies DOJ Bid to Unseal Epstein Docs

A federal judge on Wednesday denied the Justice Department’s bid to unseal Jeffrey Epstein grand jury transcripts from a Florida investigation.

Florida-based US District Judge Robin Rosenberg, an Obama appointee, said the DOJ failed to justify unsealing the records related to grand juries in West Palm Beach in 2005-2007.

Judge Rosenberg also denied a request to transfer the matter to the Southern District of New York.

Reuters reported:

Judge Englemayer made a list of demands in his response to the Justice Department.
