Damage to Baltic undersea cables appears to be sabotage, Germany’s defense minister says
- Germany’s defense minister said officials have to assume damage to two data cables under the Baltic Sea, one of which ends in Germany, was caused by sabotage — though he said they have no proof at present.
- Damage was detected Monday to the C-Lion1 cable that runs nearly 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) from Finland’s capital, Helsinki, to the German port city of Rostock. Another cable between Lithuania and Sweden was also damaged.
- “No one believes these cables were severed by mistake, and I also don’t want to believe versions that it was anchors that by chance caused damage to these cables,” he said at a regular meeting of European Union defense ministers.
- “So we have to state — without knowing in concrete terms who it came from — that this is a hybrid action. And we also have to assume — without already knowing it, obviously — that this is sabotage.”

- Following Finnish media reports that an unexplained failure of an undersea telecommunications cable has disrupted communication services between Finland and Germany, Telia’s Chief Technology Officer Andrius Šemeškevičius says that the communications cable between Lithuania and Sweden was also damaged.
- “The cable was cut on Sunday morning, at around 10:00. The systems immediately reported that we had lost the connection. Further investigation and clarification took place, and it turned out that it was damaged,” Šemeškevičius told the LRT TV Important Hour programme.
- According to him, Telia transmits the internet connection to Lithuania through three cables, which means that the internet bandwidth was reduced by one-third due to the incident. However, the connection was restored to users by bypassing the fault.

- A bill to ban Ohio’s students from using school restrooms that don’t align with their sex assigned at birth is heading to Gov. Mike DeWine after advancing at the Statehouse on Wednesday.
- The Ohio Senate voted 24-7 in favor of the ban, sending the measure to DeWine’s desk for signature before it can become law. The ban had previously stood on its own as House Bill 183 and was folded into Senate Bill 104, which amends Ohio’s College Credit Plus program, when the House passed the legislation in June.
Two Circleville police fired for misconduct- “It protects our children and grandchildren in private spaces where they are most vulnerable,” said Sen. - The Department of Justice violated its own internal policies when it sent a letter—which ended up in the New York Times—warning Elon Musk’s political action committee against its $1 million voter registration giveaway in swing states, the chairman of the Federal Election Commission alleges in a letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
- On Oct. 23, less than two weeks before the presidential election, the Times reported that the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section sent a “warning letter” to America PAC, Musk’s political group, that a $1 million giveaway for newly registered voters might violate the law. Both the letter and the leak appear to violate DOJ policies, FEC chairman Sean Cooksey argued in a letter to DOJ inspector general Michael Horowitz.
- Cooksey alleges that the DOJ’s letter to America PAC was meant to influence the outcome of the November election. In his letter, Cooksey writes that the DOJ “violated the Justice Manual’s prohibition against impermissible considerations for Department actions,” which include “timing investigative steps or criminal charges, for the purpose of affecting any election.”

Fed Chair prepared to bring suit to keep his job if Trump tries to oust him: report
- Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell is reportedly ready to go to court to save his job if President-elect Donald Trump seeks to remove him. As The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, Trump may have considered whether to fire Powell in 2018 over a disagreement over interest rates. Powell kept raising; Trump wanted them lowered. Fed leaders are reportedly prepared for an “unprecedented legal battle—the same one Fed leaders had prepared for years ago.”

- When users go to donate to her campaign on ActBlue, the nonprofit fundraising platform, the fine-print suggests that the vice president’s campaign might be launching a recount effort.
- It reads: “The first $41,300/$15,000 from a person/multicandidate committee (“PAC”) will be allocated to the DNC. The next $3,300/$5,000 from a person/PAC will be allocated to Harris for President’s Recount Account.”
- There is little other information about what the recount account is and what it plans to do. Donald Trump won the election with 312 Electoral College votes, including all seven battleground states.
