  • The Benefits of Having a Health Coach with Belinda Oberle
Reaching our optimal state of health has gotten more and more difficult - even when our doctors or physicians have already prescribed us an appropriate diet or medications. This is because we are not that motivated and committed enough to change our lifestyles. Having discipline and drive is very crucial for us to achieve the kind of health condition we want. If we still cannot resist craving our favorite desserts or buying all kinds of fast foods for our go-to meals, it will be very easy for us to fall into temptation when we start to change our diet. Just like other aspects of life, we need to alter our behavior and mindset when it comes to choosing the food we eat and how we can integrate movement and activities into our day-to-day routine. Having a health coach can guide us with our decisions when it comes to food intake and choosing the proper diet and exercise that fits us to easily meet our desired health change. Health coaches are part of the healthcare team that provides support and accountability to people through lifestyle adaptations. In this episode, we are joined by Nurse Belinda Oberle to tell us why it is important to have a health coach. Tune in to Episode 20 to learn more.Memorable Quotes:For life changes to happen, patients need both support and accountability. - Dr. Dung TrinhA person has to be committed to making changes. - Belinda OberleWhen it comes to my health, I either pay now or pay later. - Dr. Dung TrinhNo one is responsible for our health but ourselves. - Belinda OberleOther Resources:Embrace Life CoachingImportant Points:Health coaches don’t provide information but they provide accountability and structure that allows people to reach their goals. A health coach digs into deeply where doctors do not.Physicians are not trained necessarily on wellness and prevention but on diagnosis and prescription.Health changes start with behavioral changes.About the Guests:Belinda Orbele, R.N is a Nursing Coordinator for Home Health at Memorial Care Health Care and an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach at Embrace Life Coaching. The holidays for most are usually a time of joy, family gatherings and making lasting memories. • How a journey begins with a family members diagnosis, to volunteer to Case Manager
Nikki was an oncology nurse practitioner for 15 years in the Chicago area.  Nikki relocated to Nevada and began volunteering with the Nevada Affiliate. Nikki’s journey with pancreatic cancer started when her brother-in-law was diagnosed in February 2014 and died in November that year. She made a promise to him that she would continue the fight and work on bettering the outcome for patients and for families.  She continued his fight by first volunteering with the Nevada Affiliate and later retiring from nursing to go on to her now position with PanCAN as a Case Manager with their Patient Services.  Nikki connects with newly diagnosed patients and their families, provides them with information and resources allowing them to make informed decisions.  Nikki provides great information on what Patient Services is and does and she leaves us with an important message. “Everyone needs to be their own advocate.  You have to push if you know something is different with your body, make sure you see your health care provider.  We’re your purple family that can help support you so please utilize us.”
This episode of Living Hope is dedicated to Patient Services and all the Case Managers. They play an important role in the patient and caregivers journey.

  • #224 Peter Schwartz: Examining the Code of Self-Sacrifice
Show Notes  Today we’re about to go down deep and stay down long into the subject: Is it morally good to focus primarily on your own personal happiness? Author Peter Schwartz says… “From childhood, we’re taught that helping others is the essence of morality. And most people take this code of ethics for granted. They don’t challenge that premise.” Peter Schwartz does challenge that premise. In his book, The Tyranny of Need, Peter Schwartz explains why he believes that people do not fully understand what altruism calls for. In his view, it shows that what altruism really demands is not that you simply respect the rights of others or that you display benevolence toward them. Rather, altruism demands that you subordinate yourself to other’s needs. Now… Peter presents a moral alternative to the code of altruism: and that is, rational self-interest. He explains that genuine selfishness is not exemplified by the actions of the likes of a Bernie Madoff. Schwartz argues—the truly selfish individual is committed to moral principles. He lives an honest, productive, and self-respecting life. His book, The Tyranny of Need, shows you how to uphold your moral right to the pursuit of your own happiness. Just a bit on Peter… PETER SCHWARTZ is a retired Chairman of the Board of the Ayn Rand Institute—the pre-eminent organization for the dissemination of Ayn Rand’s ideas—and he is now a Distinguished Fellow there.   As you might imagine, in this episode of the Next Chapter with Charlie, Peter and I engage in quite meaningful discussion of this oh-so controversial topic. With that, let’s welcome Peter Schwartz to the show.   For more visit Peter Schwartz at www.Petershwartz.com Check out Peter’s book: The Tyranny of Need

  • Blazing New Trails
After 30 years as a successful St. Louis Attorney, Tom Sauerwein was looking for an encore career.  Something that combined his passion for the outdoors with his desire to work with his wife Carla (a longtime Pediatric Nurse).  But what could fit that bill?  How about opening a Pedego Electric Bicycle store.  "What seemed like an improbable fit at first, quickly became the perfect solution for both of us", beams Tom.  "For it combined my experience of helping clients with Carla's many years in health care and helping others. All of which we continue to do every day. As a couple. For couples our age (and others)".
What could be better?  Working outdoors. Helping customers get fit, get active and get out on the trail again. Like the famous pioneer trail that runs right behind their store.  "It sure feels like it was meant to be" adds Carla with a smile, as she lists all the happy coincidences that led towards this path, from getting on their first ebike to stumbling upon the perfect store.  Right on one of the largest "rails to trails" projects that have crisscrossed Missouri (and so many other states) with miles and miles of new bike paths.  Turning forgotten rail and pioneer trails into modern adventures. For this couple and all those they help ride along the way.
