What is the essence of style?
Sidney Yap has explored that very question over a long & storied fashion styling career that includes runway, editorial, TV/film, commercial, prenup, celebrity, and personal styling.
Artistically inclined from a young age, Sid found his calling producing fashion shows for student orgs while completing his degree in business management at the Ateneo de Manila University. He went to on study at Parsons School of Design in New York, followed up by a stint in retail merchandising, before a quick styling gig had the industry knocking on his door to pursue styling full-time.
The looks he created for celebrity and prenup clients are all over social media, but you’ve probably also seen his work in publications like Cosmo, FHM, Good Housekeeping, Lifestyle Asia, Manila Bulletin, Mega, Men’s Health, Metro, People Asia, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Philippine Star, Preview, Seventeen, Star Studio (which awarded him Celebrity Stylist of the Year), the Star Magic Catalogue, and Yes! magazine.
On this episode, Sid gives us a peek behind the scenes of a typical event or shoot. We also discuss finding one's personal style, Zoom dressing, the best-dressed member of BTS, his research into fashion history, and his zen approach to letting go of possessions.
He also shares his optimistic outlook for what is ahead, after a rocky period for all. All in all, something cheery to kick off the New Year.
This episode is dedicated to everyone who has had to start over from scratch this year.
NOTE: We'd planned to release this episode in December, but put it on hold in light of the devastation caused by supertyphoon Odette / Rai in our hometown, Philippines. Our featured non-profit Lokal Lab is focusing on relief efforts in Siargao as well as longer-term plans to rebuild a stronger and more climate resilient island. If you’re in Metro Manila and have clothing and other resources to spare, you may send in-kind donations till the end of January. They are also accepting cash and crypto donations from all over the world. Visit @lokallab on IG or https://linktr.ee/lokal.lab for more.
