Use this checklist to prepare for an emergency and to spot possible safety problems in your home.

The purpose of this is to summarize the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (DEBRA) International evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the provision of occupational therapy (OT) for children and adults living with inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB). This is a rare genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility leading to blister formation occurring spontaneously or following minor trauma. Current OT practice for persons with EB is based on anecdotal care, clinical expertise and trial and error with collaboration between caregiver and patient. Intervention based on research is needed to establish a foundation of knowledge to guide international practitioners to create and improve standards of care and to be able to work effectively with those living with the rare diagnosis of this condition.

The Convention celebrates human diversity and human dignity. Its main message is that persons with disabilities are entitled to the full spectrum of human rights and funda- mental freedoms without discrimination. This is reflected in the Convention’s preamble and throughout its articles. In prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability and establish- ing that reasonable accommodation shall be provided to persons with disabilities with a view to ensuring equality, the Convention promotes the full participation of persons with disabilities in all spheres of life. In establishing the obligation to promote positive percep- tions and greater social awareness towards persons with disabilities, it challenges customs and behaviour based on stereotypes, prejudices, harmful practices and stigma relating to persons with disabilities. In establishing a mechanism for complaints, the Convention’s Optional Protocol ensures that persons with disabilities have an equal right to redress for violations of the rights enshrined in the Convention.

Most people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can live with their families independently or with supports, and do well in conventional housing. But for people with significant ASD and additional medical or behavioral challenges, most conventional housing does not work. These individuals, their families and their caregivers often face profound challenges because of the inadequacy of their homes. An inadequate environment can directly influence the decision to place an individual with ASD in out-of-home care.

We learn from our clients just as much as we teach them.  Here is just one of the lessons I've learned.

A multi-dimensional, comprehensive care approach is advocated to promote positive outcomes for individuals with MS, and rehabilitation is an integral part of comprehensive MS care. There is a documented need for improvements in rehabilitative services, including incorporation of standardized measures for the evaluation and ongoing assessment of persons with MS, increased awareness for the signs and symptoms of a change in patient status, and a need for patient engagement in identification of rehabilitation goals and treatment strategies. Increased collaboration and communication between disciplines is needed to fully realize the goals of MS rehabilitation and optimize quality of life for those with MS.

While the effects of a stroke are as variable and indiscriminate as the number of those who suffer them, effective post-stroke care is central to realizing the fullest potential for recovery.  Exercise can be a big factor.
