As an outcome measure specifically designed for spinal cord injury, the Spinal Cord Independence Measure  is a tool that evaluates how much safe, cheap and independent, a patient can do basic activities of daily living. It was developed specifically for patients with spinal cord lesions in order to make the functional assessments of patients with paraplegia or tetraplegia more sensitive to changes. The SCIM includes the following areas of function: self-care (subscore (0-20), respiration and sphincter management (0-40) and mobility (0-40). Each area is scored according to its proportional weight in these patients' general activity. The final score ranges from 0 to 100. (free evaluation)

Here are 10 easy proprioceptive activities! The proprioceptive system provides an individual with information regarding the position of the body in space. This includes position of body parts, rate and timing of movements, how much force muscles are exerting, and how much and how fast the muscle is being stretched. These proprioceptive activities can be very calming, organizing, and regulating, decreasing stress and anxiety.

Intended Population:

Method of Use

• The Tinetti Falls Efficacy Scale is a 10-item questionnaire designed to assess confidence in patients' ability to perform 10 daily tasks without falling as an indicator of how one's fear of falling impacts physical performance
• Each item is rated from 1 ("very confident") to 10 ("not confident at all"), and the per item ratings are added to generate a summary total score
• Total scores can range from 10 (best possible) to 100 (worst possible). Thus, lower scores indicate more confidence and higher scores indicate lack of confidence and greater fear of falling

The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) is a measurement tool that can be used to assess dynamic balance, gait, and risk for falls. Originally developed to assess older adult’s fall risk by having the subject adapt to different tasks while ambulating, the DGI has been validated in multiple populations. The inter-rater reliability has been reported as moderate to excellent.  As an occupational therapist, this is a great tool to look at home safety when ambulating throughout the house. It can also lead to making some needed home modifications.
