What if I told you that the research community has discovered the single most potent predictor of mental and physical disease processes for all people and across the lifespan? In this article, I argue for the importance of operationalizing the variables related to self-regulation and co-regulation and that doing so is critically important to developing intervention and outcome measures. Unifying terminology and formally operationalizing variables would provide a way to both facilitate and monitor the early
building blocks of lifelong health. Furthermore, doing so would advance occupational science’s unique contribution to the reduction of the effects of early life stress on disability and disease.

The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) for cerebral palsy is based on self-initiated movement, with
emphasis on sitting, transfers, and mobility. When defining a five-level classification system, our primary criterion has been that the distinctions between levels must be meaningful in daily life. Distinctions are based on functional limitations, the need for hand-held mobility devices (such as walkers, crutches, or canes) or wheeled mobility, and to a much lesser extent, quality of movement.

Brainwave entrainment, also referred to as brainwave synchronization and neural entrainment, refers to the hypothesized capacity of the brain to naturally synchronize its brainwave frequencies with the rhythm of periodic external stimuli, most commonly auditory, visual, or tactile.

The FAST identifies factors that may influence problem behaviors. Use it only for screening as part of a comprehensive functional analysis of the behavior. Administer the FAST to several individuals who interact with the client frequently. Then use the results to guide direct observation in several different situations to verify suspected behavioral functions and to identify other factors that may influence the problem behavior.

Self-awareness and insight are critical functions required to maintain safe and optimal participation in all daily life activities in a variety of environmental contexts. In the past two decades, occupational therapists have developed several psychometrically sound assessments designed to identify self-awareness and insight deficits in patients with neurological disorders. This scoping review identifies and evaluates key properties of such assessments to inform clinical practice.
