Concerns raised over lack of bus shelters in Sligo

It is understood that some of the operating theatres in Sligo University Hospital are closed today due to leaks in the roof.

There are hopes that the theatres will reopen on Tuesday however this may be delayed to Wednesday pending the impact of Storm Amy.

Due to the closure all planned surgeries for next week have been cancelled.

A Sligo Senator has raised the issue of child poverty and homelessness in the Seanad.

Speaking this morning, Labour Senator Nessa Cosgrove asked the Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary about the rising numbers of children in poverty.

She raised examples of pupils coming to school hungry and parents skipping meals to feed their children.

Sinn Féin Councillor John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh is calling for the full reopening of Glenveagh Castle tours seven days a week, after confirmation there are no current plans to do so.

The Castle remains closed every Monday and Friday, with the Government blaming staffing shortages, a situation Ó Fearraigh says is unacceptable for a major tourist site.

He warns the closures are affecting Donegal's reputation and disrupting local tourism trade.

Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny says the government has failed to tackle soaring insurance costs, leaving families, businesses, and community groups under financial pressure.

He says insurance companies are making massive profits while customers face rising premiums across car, home, and health cover.

Deputy Kenny is backing a Dáil motion calling for transparency and action to reduce prices across the sector.

A new indoor market is set to begin in Sligo.

This Sunday will see the Canopy in Sligo town host a new indoor market from 11am to 4pm.

The move is seen as a spiritual successor to the now-closed Strandhill People's Market.

Clodagh Higgins, one of the driving forces behind the project, has said that there are a large number of traders looking to set up shop.

The median price of a home has shot up by 26 percent in Sligo since last year.


The next highest increase according to the CSO was Limerick, at 17 percent.


Meanwhile the median age of a home buyer has not changed, it remains at 40.
