LIGHTHOUSE: Songs & Currents: "Addressing Anxiety Fast" Matthew 6: 25-34 @ Ocean Grove Church, November 6, 2022 - 9 AM Discussion Questions: What don’t you worry about? What do you worry about? What is the difference? What are you having for dinner tonight? How did you come to that decision? What is a spiritual discipline? Would you call it “discipline” or something else like practice, education, or growth? Have you ever fasted for medical reasons (or bloodwork)? How about as a spiritual disciple? What was it like? Going Deeper: Read Exodus 16:1-32; Luke 9:12-17 Who do you identify with the most in these two biblical accounts: the crowd, the Israelites, the disciples, the one who took too much manna, Moses, Jesus, etc.? Why do you identify with them? How do you define sin? Do you feel it is a sin for some of the Israelites to have taken too much? Read Genesis 41 How do you know when to store up and when to not? Sometimes our anxiety comes from not hearing, understanding, or knowing what God wants us to do. How do you go about clarifying what God is asking you to do? We are called to live by faith (Galatians 2:20). Yet, at times, God gives clear direction. How do you deal with situations that require faith over God’s clear direction? Action Steps: Read Matthew 6:16-18; Exodus 34:28 Pray to God about fasting. Talk to a medical professional about fasting. Look up how “Christian fasting for spiritual edification” and read about how to fast. Pray about what God wants to do through you. Fast this week and journal about your experience and what God is doing in your life. If you suffer from anxiety, pay attention and see if some or all of your anxiety is relieved. How do you feel when someone talks to you about money? Where are you "polite" boundaries about discussion regarding money? Never share your salary or the value of your stuff like house, car, etc. or everything is fair game to talk about. What do you think the Bible says about generosity? What is a tithe? What are first fruits? Do you consider giving to the church as generosity, obligation, or something else? Going Deeper: Read and discuss Malachi 3:6-13 What can you find out about the context of this passage? Explain to someone what you think the passage means. Compare Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4 What are your arguments for and against giving everything you have to God? Action Steps: Read Matthew 6:19-21 What treasurer is Jesus talking about? List as many different treasures as you can. How would you begin to take measurable steps to love more or serve more or give more, etc.? In your journal, create a plan to increase the giving of your treasures with measurable action steps (like step 1: I am going to find 10 new passages in the Bible regarding giving. Step 2: I will read all 10 every day and pray for God to bring me insight for an entire week. Step 3: Starting next Sunday, I will give God my first 10 minutes of every day. Etc.) Describe how God has remained faithful through time in good seasons and bad. Read Jeremiah 29:11. Do you think this means that God's plans for your life will happen, or do you need to make an investment in time and energy? Action Steps: Read 1 Kings 19:11-13. When you are not too tired, find a quiet place of solitude. On Monday, spend 1 minute quietly listening to the silence. Add 1 minute every day. Going Deeper: What led to you deciding or choosing what your favorites or likes are? One way to understand your talents and gifts is through the "means of grace" (internet search - Wesley means of grace) or "spiritual disciplines" do you use throughout the week? Why do you feel you engage with those used more often than the other ones? Action Steps Describe the way you learn best. Pray and write down what God might be trying to teach you. Journal about how those important aspects of faith tie into your skills, hobbies, and likes in ways God might be inviting you to grow, learn, and do? Are you doing it? Is God inviting you into something new? Extra Credit: How would you describe to someone what the "means of grace" are? How about "spiritual disciplines?" What words would you use to describe the most important aspects of your faith? Salvation, righteousness, justification, heaven, forgiveness, etc. Sometimes we uses words and terms filled with rich, beautiful meaning, but archaic, forgotten, meaningless, unclear or culturally redefined - like "discipline, "sin," or "righteous."
