Is Never Say Never Again a proper James Bond film? This is the question at the centre of our latest episode of the Oddjob Pod. Irvin Kershner's 1983 rebel Bond film based on Kevin McLorey and Ian Fleming's original story for Thunderball was a hugely controversial outing at the time but it was also a critical and box office success. This was, of course, mainly thanks to in part thanks to the return of Sean Connery to the role of Bond but also due to the outstanding cast and crew that contributed to this remarkably polished film, given the challenges that it faced. Graham, Terry and Gary assess the merits and authenticity of this film and ask if it deserves more respect and recognition. We also put it up against the film it remade, Thunderball and it’s rival from the same year, Octopussy. And we ask what impact if any, the movie had on the official James Bond Franchise. Blofeld's volcano air will host the group stages of the World Cup of Bond Villains.Finally, the moment has come. After six preliminary rounds, we are ready for the finals of the World Cup of James Bond Villains. Based upon the Football World Cup in 1982 format Graham, Terry, and your host Gary draw out the group stages and play out a full world cup all the way to the final. Join us as we enter the final preliminary round of our World Cup of Bond Villains. Our mammoth qualification period comes to an end. In this final round we assess the effectiveness or otherwise of Alec Trevelyan, Elektra King, Gustav Graves and Dominic Green. Quite the farrago of felony I'm sure you'll agree. With the exception of Trevelyan in Goldeneye, the movies in which these characters appear are not among the most celebrated among critics and Bond fandom (although all these films have there defenders). Together, Gary, Graham and Terry get to the roots of these villains and tries to find the best of the parts of them, with varying degrees of success. The preliminaries of our World Cup of Bond Villains continues with our celebration of the villains of the Sean Connery period, namely Dr No, Rosa Klebb, Kronsteen, Emilio Largo and of course Auric Goldfinger. Through these characters we discuss the development of the Bond villain and in some cases, ask if some are relocatable today. There, also some side conversations about the quality of or indeed existence of these villain's secret lairs.
