What's this black stuff? 这个黑黑的东西是什么？

I've got (too much) stuff to do. I have to go now. 我有（太多）事情要做，现在得走了。

当我们不知道或不记得某个东西的名字时，会说：

what do you call it?

它叫什么？

请大家和我读三遍

如果我们不记得某个人的名字时，也可以这么说：

what do you call him?

what do you call her?

what do you call them?

他/她/他们叫什么（来着）？

这些句子还可以组成一个长名词，一般只是口语说的，不写出来，写出来会看起来有点怪：

what-d'you-call-it/-him/-her/-them

whatchamacallit 或 whachamacallit

等很多形式……

我们不知道或者忘记东西的名字时，thing 和 stuff 这两个词就很好使，这也是为什么 thing和 stuff 使用频率那么高，就像中文我们经常说“那东西，这东西，……的东西”一样。

举个例子：

我要擦窗户，问家里人擦窗户的工具放哪了，但我忘了那东西叫什么了，就可以说：

Where's the thing for cleaning the window?

擦窗户的东西在哪儿？

clean the window 擦窗户，清洁窗户

clean 打扫，清洁，使……干净

又或者：

最近天气干燥，我就想起之前朋友说ta用的护唇的东西很好用，我忘了是什么东西，就问ta：

What's that stuff you use when your lips get dry?

你嘴唇干的时候用的那个东西是什么（来着）？

use 用，使用

when your lips get dry 你的嘴唇（变）干燥时
