start

开始

Begin 比 start 更正式一些。

Begin 是不规则动词，过去式是 began，过去分词是 begun。

Start 是规则动词，过去式和过去分词直接加-ed，started。

When did you begin learning English? 你什么时候开始学英语的？

The meeting didn't start until 9 pm. 会议直到晚上9点才开始。（until 直到，到……时；not...until... 直到……才……）

在使用对象上，begin和start也有区别：

如果要“开始”的是机器（machine），只能用start，不用begin：

Press this button to start the printer. 按这个按钮启动打印机。

press 按，压，施加压力

button 按钮，按键；扣子，纽扣

！！不说...to begin the printer.！！

The machine won't start. 机器启动不了。

！！不说The machine won't begin.！！

这句话也可以说 The machine doesn't work.（work 运转，运行，第519课学过）

这两句里begin和start的中文都是“启动”，如果启动的对象是机器，（只能）用start，如果启动的对象是工作项目，用begin也可以。

如果“开始”的对象是新的生意（a new business），只能用start，不用begin：

She started a new restaurant. 她开一家新餐馆。/她新开一家餐馆。

！！不说She began a new restaurant.！！

She started a new restaurant and it's been going really well. 她开了一家新餐馆，生意很好。
