Mathew Nelson - Executive Director, Arizona Trail

Thankful to connect with Matt recently. I reached out to him because I thought he would be a great person to connect the complexities that go into allowing all of us outdoor enthusiasts, our spaces and places to do the things we love. We go over a bit of his background and how he found his way yo Arizona, and to the position of Executive Director, what that entails, the complexity of maintaining and finishing the Arizona Trail. Where funding for the AZ trail comes from, how it’s up kept, plans for the future, constant work that needs to be done, etc. We also cover a bit if where funding at the national level comes from for public lands like National forests, wilderness areas, National parks, state trust lands, native/reservation land, private lands - how important it is to understand this and contribute in your own way, not taking things for grated. Matt has been the Executive Director since 2012, written hundreds of articles on it, wrote the book complete guide to the trail, among many other roles as Executive Director. He’s also driving around in a Toyota Tacoma ! Which was donated by the Valley Toyota Dealers, so shoutout to those folks helping support and connect all types of outdoor recreation activities. Caught up local musician, Rob Riccardo

We chatted about his joinery and how he’s using is voice, literally and figuratively, through music to share his ability to express those experiences we all go through. We touch on his dabble into endurance running, growing up on the east coast, surfing, finding music, his yoga and spiritual journey, moving to Arizona with his wife, his encounter with his spirit animal - mountain lion - and a lot more. Colin Strickland

Also able to connect with Colin Strickland while out in California for the BWR Survival camp. As with Pete, and the burgeoning alternative racing scene (gravel, fixed gear, etc events) there is much to hear and see about what Colin is up to, and has accomplished. As well as the different path taken to get there. We chat a bit of his background growing up, his education, work life, as well his long history on the bike and now starting to carve out the time for bikes. Paving his own way and connecting with sponsors that truly support him financially to do the work and create the story he’s telling. Also, with his degree in environmental sciences, we discuss this further and using the bike for change. In addition,

I ask him just what story he’d like to tell with the spotlight and focus upon him now.

Peter Stetina

Hey!! Was lucky enough to connect with Pete Stetina while out in California for the BWR Survival camp. We sat down and spoke about his career a bit, his switch up to take advantage and make a mark in the privateer arena - doing gravel, mountain, and road events - in addition to heading up his own event, Stetina’s Paydirt. You’ll be able to find more info on Pete with his social media below. Quite a bit of interview online and in pods like this, plus he’s getting great backing from his sponsors and doing little project with them as well.

One thing that generally gets overlooked and glossed over, is his rehabilitation from his crash in 2015. This is where I am thankful Pete saw what I’m trying to do with these. Helping understand just what it takes do do things well and set oneself up for the best possible outcome.

Travis McCabe- well here you have it. Travis and I sat down to catch up, reminiscing about our time together on and off the bike, what he’s been learning and applying to constantly be at the top of the sport. In addition, as you all may know by now - we talk about his signing to the WorldTour with Israel Cycling Academy. So happy and proud of what he’s done, and for him to have a chance to put it all together with ICA. Also, super stoked as he’ll be on Factor Bikes, as they are the official sponsor for team. This was really fun to catch up with mike and reminisce a bit. I love sharing this conversation to those who enjoy cycling and to give some insight into the experience and wisdom that Mike has. For me, I see his gift of being able to get the most out of his rider and those around him. Very thankful for him to allow us the opportunity we have had and then help facilitate that for others as well.

We speak about his career, some insight on how he was and what was driving him to be his best. Also, what drove him onto the ground - and o pose the question, how do you get across to a young Mike - knowing that state of mind he was in at the time.

We go over our time with SmartStop a bit, as well as into his directing of the USA Paralympic team - and onto currently the AeVolo development crew. A bit on the state of cycling in the USA, social media and how it has changed the sport/our lives, attaining sponsorships, the year ahead of the AeVolo team - among other wide ranging topics.

Lindsay Goldman

Fantastic convo with Lindsay Goldman, currently the Director of Membership at USA Cycling, professional cyclist and Co-Owner/general manager for Hagens-Berman Supermint team, mother, wife, and working on top of all this at the same time!, which is one of the topics we delve into a little, how to make that all happen, and why it’s needed a a female cyclist with lesser opportunities and pay. We also go over how she found the bike, her live for it, finding her way and place in that professional peloton. To seeing first hand how fleeting and shirt lived some of the opportunity/teams can be in cycling. And then taking it on herself in starting a team up. We discuss the never ending search for support and sponsors, the challenges, and what’s driving her to try so hard. Of course we cover motherhood huge transition, trying to embrace the change and challenges if it that lead to seeing her daughter grow and develop.

Then we talk about her position at USA Cycling, Director of Membership. What’s that means, how she’s looking to draw upon her previous experience to help grow, and her stick to it attitude to be successful.

Thankful to connect with her, as it was a busy time at USA Cycling as I was passing through.

Oh my goodness, this interview is far, far overdue. This was one of the first I had done, and it was over the phone. Since then, I’ve not done any interviews on the phone, as it was apparent to me that the one-on-one is far superior, allowing for the trust and space to open up and share.

That said, recently the movie The Game Changers came out. Where Dotsie is one of the featured athletes/stories. (http://gamechangersmovie.com), Directed by Academy Award winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar winner James Cameron, And quickly became the #1 downloaded film of all time on iTunes.

Wether you tune into the interview I did, or with Rich Roll - you’ll Learn she’s had quite the story and is an incredible inspiration to overcome eating disorders and ultimately attempting suicide. Which has her rock bottom finding the bucycle. Which turns into the outlet to pick her back up. Taking the power from doing so, and moving forward to help others with that experience. We get into her background before cycling and into the Olympics - and where she’s at now, goals for the future-
