  • 107 | Getting Bombed With One-Star Reviews? Your First 48 Hours

Forty-three one-star Google reviews before you’ve even gotten out of bed is the kind of moment that can make a business owner spiral. We’ve all seen it happen: a short clip goes viral on TikTok or Facebook, strangers swarm your profile, your rating drops overnight, and suddenly you’re fighting for your reputation against people who were never customers. I’m Dr. Brooks Deming, and I’m kicking off a four-part “One-Star Comeback” series with the part that decides everything, what you do in the first 48 hours.

We follow three different (fictional but realistic) business owners to show how the same crisis hits differently depending on your model: Marcus with a family restaurant, Tasha as a mobile hairstylist built on local trust, and Danielle running an online shop with shipping delays. From there, I walk you through a clear timeline for crisis management and online reputation management: the first two hours where you do not respond, the next window where you document everything, and the critical step of sorting reviews into three piles so you know what to report to Google and what to own.

Then we craft the simplest tool most owners skip: one calm holding statement posted where the conversation is happening, with a real update date you must keep. We close with an “off-balance check” that changes how you lead under pressure: are you reacting to protect your ego or to protect your customers? If you want a steady plan for review bombs, viral backlash, and protecting your small business brand without making it worse, hit play, subscribe, and leave a review, then share this with an owner who might need it today.

  • 106 | Are You The Workplace Bully

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not a bully, I’m just direct,” this conversation might stop you in your tracks. We’ve spent weeks talking about bullying managers, bullying coworkers, and the people who witness it and stay silent. Now we turn the question inward: what if the patterns you call leadership are landing as intimidation, humiliation, or fear?

I’m Brooks Deming, Doctor of Business Administration, business coach, and resilience expert, and I break down 10 practical signs you may be engaging in workplace bullying without recognizing it. We talk about the room that goes quiet when you walk in, public “accountability” that embarrasses people, sarcasm that cuts, withholding information, punishing disagreement, gossip, and the classic shutdown line: “You’re too sensitive.” We also look at favoritism, inconsistent standards, and the temptation to justify harm with “that’s just who I am.”

Then we get specific about how bullying gets disguised as leadership. We translate familiar phrases like “I have high standards,” “I was only joking,” and “that’s how I was trained” into the self-check questions that actually build psychological safety and respectful communication. Finally, you’ll get a clear path forward: stop defending long enough to examine, name the exact behavior, take responsibility without excuses, seek appropriate feedback, change consistently over time, and accept that accountability may still be necessary.

Take the closing reflection with you: if everyone in your workplace treated people the way you do, what kind of workplace would you have? Subscribe, share this with a leader who needs it, and leave a review if it helps you lead with more courage and care.

  • 105 | From Silence To Support In Workplace Bullying

The moment someone gets humiliated in a meeting, hit with an inappropriate joke, or turned into office gossip, most of us feel the same jolt: this is wrong. Then the next feeling shows up just as fast: if I speak up, will I be the next target? We dig into that split-second decision and why “staying out of it” can quietly become a habit that protects workplace bullying and damages organizational culture.

We walk through four bystander roles you have probably seen in real life: passive bystanders who do nothing, reinforcing bystanders who laugh or spread gossip, supportive bystanders who check on the targeted employee afterward, and active bystanders who intervene safely. From an HR and leadership lens, we unpack the real reasons people freeze, including fear of retaliation, uncertainty about outcomes, lack of confidence in management, and power dynamics that make speaking up feel risky.

You also get five practical, specific responses you can use right away: interrupting respectfully when it is safe, checking in privately, refusing to participate in gossip, documenting only what you directly saw and heard, and supporting the targeted person without taking control. We spend time on the hardest twist too: what happens when the bully is your friend, mentor, or the manager who helped your career. Accountability is not betrayal, and sometimes the most ethical move is the conversation nobody else is willing to have.

If you care about psychological safety, resilience at work, and real-world bystander intervention strategies, this one is for you. Subscribe, share this with a friend or coworker, and leave a review, then tell us: when you witness mistreatment, do you interrupt it, reinforce it, or stay silent?

  • 104 | How To Handle A Bullying Coworker At Work

Your boss might be fine, but your coworker is slowly making the job unbearable. That’s the hidden reality of employee-to-employee workplace bullying, and it often gets brushed off as “office humor,” “competitiveness,” or a “strong personality” until the team starts cracking.

We break down the difference between normal workplace conflict and repeated conduct meant to intimidate, humiliate, undermine, or isolate. I share clear examples you can actually recognize in real time: being excluded from key information, getting ridiculed in meetings, rumors that damage credibility, group chats used to mock colleagues, and the exhausting moment when everyone sees it but no one wants to get involved. Then we get practical with what to do next, including how to address the behavior directly when it’s safe, why retaliation backfires, and how to document incidents so the pattern is undeniable.

For managers and HR, we get specific about your responsibility to act. I walk through practical management strategies: gather facts quickly, meet with people individually and impartially, focus on documented behavior over popularity, apply expectations consistently, and follow up to make sure the behavior stops and retaliation doesn’t start. We also name the dangerous exception leaders sometimes make: protecting a bully because they’re a high performer. Performance should never become permission to mistreat people, and long-term results always suffer when talent is used as a shield.

If you want a healthier culture, start here. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review so more leaders stop calling bullying a “personality conflict.”

  • 103| Surviving A Bullying Boss

If the hardest part of your job isn’t the work but the person “leading” you, you’re not imagining it. We’re kicking off a much-needed workplace bullying series by naming what bullying from leadership actually looks like, especially the subtle behaviors that get dismissed as “just their style.” When you’re rehearsing conversations, second guessing emails, avoiding questions, and quietly doubting your competence, that’s not motivation, that’s fear.

We walk through clear warning signs of a bullying manager: public humiliation in meetings, withholding key information, unrealistic expectations followed by punishment, threats used as control, taking credit for your work, isolating you from communication and opportunities, inconsistent standards, retaliation when concerns are raised, and sarcasm or personal attacks disguised as management. We also draw an important line: accountability is not bullying, and difficult feedback can be delivered without degrading someone.

Because the power imbalance is real, we focus on practical strategies you can use right now. That includes documenting behavior with dates and direct quotes, requesting clarification in writing, learning your organization’s reporting procedures (HR, employee relations, ombuds), and understanding that for federal employees there may be additional options like EEO processes, grievances, and prohibited personnel practices with strict deadlines. We also talk about setting professional boundaries when it’s safe and protecting your professional identity so mistreatment doesn’t become your measure of worth.

If you’re navigating a toxic workplace, let this be your reminder: you shouldn’t have to lose your dignity to earn a paycheck. Subscribe for the rest of the series, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review to help more people find the conversation.

  • 102 | I Stopped Coaching To Help Entrepreneurs Build Real Businesses

    Pricing Strategy Blueprint: https://brooksdemming.com/store/products/the-pricing-blueprint

I disappeared on purpose and the reason matters if you’re building a business that actually fits your life. After months away, I’m back to explain the pivot that surprised even me: I stopped coaching and repositioned as a business architect. That means I’m focused less on motivation and more on the business foundation behind your vision, including systems, policies, contracts, service design, operations, and growth planning that can scale without breaking you.

I also tell the truth about starting over. I redesigned my website, changed my branding and messaging, and deleted my email list even after growing it past 1,000 contacts. It sounds wild until you remember that audience alignment beats vanity metrics every time. Sometimes business growth looks like subtraction before multiplication, because serving the right people is more important than collecting the most people.

Then we get into the issue I keep seeing across entrepreneurs and nonprofits: pricing. We break down three costly pricing mistakes, including charging based on emotion, copying competitors, and discounting before anyone asks. You’ll learn how to calculate a minimum profitable price, how to anchor your rates in value and positioning, and why “state your price and stop talking” can instantly upgrade your sales conversations. I also share a pricing strategy guide you can download to build a real pricing model with worksheets and clear questions.

Subscribe for weekly episodes, share this with a business owner who’s undercharging, and leave a review if it helps you price with confidence.

  • 101| Coaching Lens: Visibility Is Not Credibility

Everybody wants the fast track: six figures, brand deals, clients, and the freedom that comes with “scaling.” But there’s a darker trend growing inside online entrepreneurship and business coaching culture: people teaching what they’ve never built, coaching what they’ve never sustained, and leading with borrowed language instead of lived experience. I’m Dr. Brooks Deming, and I’m pulling the curtain back on how false expertise spreads, why it’s so persuasive, and how it quietly drains entrepreneurs of money, time, and trust.

We talk about the biggest confusion I see right now: visibility getting treated like credibility. A big following, confident delivery, luxury branding, and polished content can look like proof, but presentation is not operational excellence. We dig into why desperation changes discernment, how certainty gets sold to overwhelmed founders, and the specific questions you should ask before you invest in a coach, course, or “scaling” program. This is a practical conversation about due diligence, sustainable business systems, leadership competency, and protecting your momentum.

Then we flip the mirror. It’s easy to point at scammers while slowly becoming one ourselves through exaggeration, performance, or pretending we’re ready for rooms we don’t have the capacity to lead. If you’re still learning, there’s no shame in saying so. Real growth looks like consistency, discipline, refinement, and time, and integrity is the difference between a brand that looks successful and a business that can actually last.

If this hits home, subscribe to Off Balance, share it with a builder who needs it, and leave a review so more entrepreneurs can find conversations rooted in clarity and integrity.

  • 100| When Credentials Speak Louder Than Skill

Episode 100 felt like the right time to talk about something many professionals sense but rarely name out loud: prestige bias at work. I’m talking about the moment a school name, company logo, title, or network walks into the room before you do and suddenly people “know” what you can do without seeing you do it. That shortcut can sound efficient, but it can also distort hiring, promotion decisions, mentorship access, and whose voice gets treated as credible.

I unpack how institutional signaling fuels fast judgments and how the halo effect makes one positive marker spill into assumed intelligence, discipline, and leadership potential. I’m careful to say this is not an anti-education argument. Great institutions can open doors and create real opportunity. The problem starts when prestige becomes a substitute for discernment and when organizations confuse perceived safety with proven capability.

We also get practical about what leaders should evaluate instead: judgment, communication, adaptability, emotional maturity, integrity, and consistency under pressure. Those traits show up during conflict, deadlines, uncertainty, and accountability, not just during interviews. And if you’ve ever felt underestimated because of your background, accent, age, personality, or pathway, I share the mindset that keeps you moving: keep building, keep learning, and build a body of work so strong it becomes hard to ignore. If this resonates, subscribe, share it with someone navigating their career, and leave a review so more people can find the conversation.

  • 99| The Peter Principle In Ministry

You can love God, serve hard, and still be set up to fail by a promotion you were never prepared to carry. I’m Dr. Brooks Deming, and I’m naming a leadership problem many church teams feel but rarely say out loud: ministries often elevate people based on visibility, loyalty, or gifting, then act surprised when communication breaks down, conflict rises, volunteers burn out, and the culture turns unhealthy.

We dig into the Peter Principle and why it shows up so often in church leadership and nonprofit ministry leadership. A great worship leader, usher, or volunteer can be exceptional in a role and still lack the next-level competencies that leadership demands: delegation, coaching, accountability, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, boundaries, operations, and strategic decision making. When we confuse spiritual passion with leadership competence, we don’t just stress out the leader, we create systems where people get hurt and dysfunction gets mislabeled as “spiritual authority.”

Then we get practical about solutions that actually build sustainable leadership: mentorship before authority, training before elevation, leadership coaching, emotional intelligence development, clear accountability, healthier systems, and real leadership pipelines. Calling is real, but stewardship requires preparation, and preparation is not a lack of faith.

If you’ve seen burnout praised as sacrifice or control mistaken for strength, share this with a leader who cares about doing better. Subscribe to Off Balance, leave a review, and send this episode to a friend who needs language for what they’ve been experiencing.

  • 98 | Nonprofit Fraud: The Red Flags Leaders Keep Missing

Book Business & HR Clarity Audit

    Off-Balance Sponsorship

Fraud in nonprofits doesn’t usually start with a villain, it starts with a gap. When leaders rely on trust but skip structure, even mission-driven organizations can become easy targets for theft, fake invoices, inflated reporting, and quiet misuse of restricted funds. I’m Dr. Brooks Deming, and I’m naming the uncomfortable reality: nonprofit fraud is not rare, it’s just underreported, and the damage is far bigger than dollars. It breaks donor confidence, board credibility, and community impact.

We walk through the Feeding Our Future case, a massive pandemic-era child nutrition scandal where reimbursements were allegedly claimed through fake meal sites and fabricated counts, with an estimated $250 million tied to fraudulent claims. The lesson isn’t just about scale, it’s about systems: weak oversight during crisis, over-reliance on self-reporting, lack of segregation of duties, and ignored red flags. I also touch on the Wounded Warrior Project controversy as a reminder that even when something isn’t criminal fraud, a lack of transparency can still trigger a trust collapse and a sharp drop in donations.

Then we get practical. You’ll learn the most common nonprofit fraud signals, the three root causes that show up again and again, and the simple internal controls that reduce risk fast: dual approvals, monthly financial review with real questions, independent audits, written financial policies, mandatory time off and role rotation, and a whistleblower policy. If you’re a nonprofit leader, board member, or executive who wants stronger governance, better financial oversight, and real sustainability, this conversation is for you.

Subscribe, share with a fellow leader, and leave a review so more nonprofits build the systems that protect their people and their mission.
