Introducing Olivia Van Vliet and Tina Tazelaar! 

Olivia and Tina are both freshman at Ripon Christian High School.  Ripon Christian seems to have an inexhaustible supply of students with great supervised agricultural experiences that I can profile on the show.

Olivia and Tina are both propagating succulents for their supervised agricultural experience with hopes of selling them later.  This interview did what all of my FFA interviews do - it demonstrated how much students in agricultural education are learning.

Introducing Wade Reiter! 

Wade Reiter is a very impressive young man who is positive that he wants to farm.  When I asked him if he wants to continue farming in his future, there was no doubt in his voice.  He had an adamant "yes" for me.

Wade has been progressively getting more and more responsibility on his family's farm in Southern Virginia.  He has gone from doing basic work to progressively driving larger tractors to marketing his family's hay for them.  Wade took his forage production capabilities to Indianapolis this year for the FFA National Convention, and he was recognized as the national champion in forage production!

Theresa Sheridan has a skill and a love - marketing/web design and agriculture - she has found a way to combine those two things to immerse herself in agriculture, live life on her terms and make a living.

This episode is packed with great advice and nuggets of gold when it comes to starting your own business, going all the way in agriculture and marketing your services or products.

ADVICE FROM THERESA:

Invest in Yourself - get the training and knowledge that you need to be successful

Get marketing help - she hired a marketing coach and then her business took off - if you do not know something, hire somebody who does

Do not be scared to outsource -  you have to concentrate on your strengths - do not spend all your time building up your weaknesses

PERSONAL HABIT THAT MAKES THERESA SUCCESSFUL:

Theresa works works when she is most productive.  That is from about 5am until noon.  Then she focuses on other things.

Eliminate all distractions.  At no other time in history have their been more distractions.  Make it your mission to eliminate these.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE EVER GIVEN TO THERESA:

"It's Not About You" - this came from her marketing coach.  It does not matter what you want or how you want something to look.  It matters what your ideal customer wants.

Introducing Tierra Kelley! 

There is a lot about what this young lady is doing that I admire.  Tierra Kelley had a desire for a great supervised agricultural experience that was related to agricultural production but was outside of the box.  Has she ever gone outside the box.

Tierra has decided to market her own barbeque rubs and sauces.  The first thing that I like about this story is that she has introduced a new business model to the Off-Farm Income audience.  She has located a company in Minnesota that makes the sauces and rubs and then has their customers market them with their own brand names.  It is a great model that shares the risk and allows each business to focus on what it is best at, either marketing or production.

Tierra has also developed her own labels and product names.  And she wants to develop her own recipe for a rub as well.  In addition to all of this had the initiative to fly to Minnesota, meet the people from the company she will be doing business with and get a first hand look at how the product she will be marketing is produced.

Last, Tierra took a good look at agricultural production and saw that there were two sides to it.  A beginning and an end.  She said to herself that there were lots of people in agriculture dealing with the beginning.  Why not deal with the end and produce something for the consumer that will enhance their experience.  Great idea!

Introducing Nalder Boyce! 

I love this story for so many reasons.  I think the biggest reason I love this story is I love it when somebody dreams of a great life that otherwise seems impossible, but they make it happen anyway.

My guest this episode is still in high school, so he has not quite achieved the above statement yet.  But, he has parents who are showing him the way, and I love being connected in anyway to a story where somebody did what 99% of people will dream about but then convince themselves is impossible.

For those of you who have never been to Island Park Idaho, let me explain.  Island Park is as close to Yellowstone National Park you can get in Idaho and still live in an incorporated town.  It is up in the lodgepole pines with wildlife everywhere and blue ribbon trout streams and rivers.  It is literally one of the most beautiful places in the United States.

Most people's exposure to this paradise is driving through it on their way to Yellowstone, going on a chartered fly fishing vacation or a once in a lifetime hunting trip from out of state.  Most people see the cabins, the Tetons, the rivers and dream of living there.  But about 3 days after their vacation they talk themselves out of it and assume there is no way for them to make a living there.

Nalder and his family are carving out a multi-national business from their paradise location of Island Park, Idaho.  Seeing a need in the marketplace they started producing "monoslab easy forms."

What is so amazing about Nalder and this story is that as a junior in high school he is writing copy for his family's business on their website.  He has been writing articles for his local newspaper since he was in 7th grade because he has a passion for it.  What a way to take advantage of his natural talent!  Here is an example of one of Nalder's articles: Island Park News
