Introducing Katie Benson! 

Katie has a different supervised agricultural experience than we normally profile.  However, I had to have her on.  She is doing a lot to advocate for agricuture.

Katie's SAE is "ag education."  She is teaching all the third graders in her school district about agriculture.  She has done a number of things including dispelling myths about agriculture and making products, such as butter.

Katie has had multiple students tell her that they want to join both 4H and FFA after they are done with one of her lessons.  She plans on continuing her education after high school and becoming an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisors.

OFI 137: Agricultural Crime Prevention - Protect Your Hard Work | Detective Corey Stacy | Kern County Sheriff's Office Rural Crime Investigations Unit

Very special thanks to the Kern County Sheriff's Department for agreeing to do this episode with me and accolades to Detective Corey Stacy for a great interview with great information.

There is not much that bothers me more than crime and criminal behavior in our rural and agricultural communities.  That is probably because I can remember a time when it was nearly non-existent.  Growing up in Valley Home, California we saw a lone sheriff's deputy about once per week.  It was almost predictable, and I know it was because I would always make sure that I was out by the road to see him drive by.  I was a fan.

In my entire childhood living in this small, agricultural community I can only remember the sheriff having to come to town once.  There was only one store in my hometown, and it had an alarm.  I can remember hearing it sound off late at night one night and not having any idea what I was hearing.  In all my years living about 200 yards from the store, that was the first time I had ever heard it.

Somebody had burglarized the store, and there were five to ten men from town at the store within minutes of hearing the alarm.  However, the bad guys were gone.  The sheriff came out later that morning to investigate.  That was a big deal.

That's it!  That is the only crime I ever remember being investigated in my hometown.  There was the time that Danny Holt was on a go kart with no brakes and a CHP Officer tried to pull him over.  He thought Danny was trying to run from him because he couldn't stop.  About ten of us were running behind Danny yelling at him to stop with a CHP car with lights and sirens on behind us trying to pull him over.  The next week at school we had to watch "Blood On The Ashphalt 2" or something like that scare us straight.  But this incident was not really a crime.  

However, those days are gone.  With the advent of methamphetamine we saw a shift in illicit drug use from inner cities to rural communities.  With that came increases in theft, violent crimes, domestic violence, child abuse, etc., etc.  Today farmers, ranchers and people living in rural communities look like easy targets to too many criminals.

In this episode we find out that rural criminals are not just "locals gone bad" but people who have driven out there from the city to steal and plunder.

This episode is important to those of us in agriculture and rural communities.  We work hard for what we have, and we incur a lot of risk raising crops and livestock.  When somebody comes along to take what we worked so hard to achieve, it is a double insult.  And, it shatters our image of the area we live in.

Robert Peel said that "police officers are only those members of our communities who are paid to give full time attention to the duties that are incumbent upon all of us."

Nowhere is that more true than in our rural communities where there are very few law enforcement officers per square mile.  Learn what to look for, and look out for each other!

Ryley is a junior at Springport High School in Springport, Michigan.  He has a natural talent for welding and has developed a passion for welding cages for race cars.  He started out his SAE experience as a placement in welding and now is transitional to entrepreneurship as he prepares to launch his own business.

It was exciting to speak with Ryley and hear the passion that he has for welding and specifically for automobiles.  He has a plan for how he is going to find customers, and I am eagerly watching to see where this takes him.
